What is Microsoft planning? Firm tweets teaser for Windows 1.0
What is Microsoft up to now? Firm tweets bizarre teaser for retro Windows 1.0 software that came out in 1985 and erases all other posts from Instagram
- Windows shared video promoting the ‘all new’ software on Twitter this week
- It noted Windows 1.0 will come with MS-Dos Executive and Clock, among others
- The move has baffled fans given that the software came out 34 years ago in 1985
- Some suspect firm was hacked, others speculate it’s linked to Stranger Things
Microsoft has left its Twitter followers scratching their heads after tweeting out a promotion for its ‘all-new’ software, Windows 1.0 – which came out more than 30 years ago.
The official Windows Twitter account posted a video introducing the program this week without explanation, also noting that the release would include the outdated file manager MS-Dos Executive and the Clock app.
At the same time, Windows shared the same video to Instagram and wiped out all other posts.
Fans have peppered the accounts with questions since the tweet, but the firm has so-far remained tight-lipped on the meaning of it all, responding only with vague statements and dated slang.
While some have questioned whether Windows has been hacked, others speculated that the cryptic posts may be related to the upcoming season of Stranger Things; the Netflix series takes place in 1985, the same year Windows 1.0 was released.

Microsoft has left its Twitter followers scratching their heads after tweeting out a promotion for its ‘all-new’ software, Windows 1.0 – which came out more than 30 years ago
For now, however, there are more questions than answers.
Windows tweeted the video on Monday, stating only: ‘Introducing the all-new Windows 1.0, with MS-Dos Executive, Clock, and more!!’
It also included two emoji: the surprised face and a floppy disk.
And, the account changed its Twitter header to a promo picture straight out of the 80s.
Responses from its social media followers varied from the excited to unimpressed, with many making references to other popular programs that accompanied the 34-year-old software.
Others simply wondered what the post was all about, though to no avail.
‘It’s going to be totally tubular,’ Windows responded to one user who sarcastically said they ‘can’t wait to use MS- Dos and the clock app.’
‘That’s a schweet lookin’ picture right there,’ the account replied to another, who shared a photo of the 1985 startup screen.
‘It will be totally wicked,’ Windows responded to another user.
The bizarre social media move coincides with the release of the first details on Windows 10’s 19H2 update, though it’s yet unclear if the two are related.
At the same time, Windows shared the same video to Instagram and wiped out all other posts, as seen in the screenshot above

Microsoft said in a blog post on Monday that the update will bring ‘performance improvements, enterprise features, and quality enhancements,’ to the latest version of the software.
It appears the updates, expected to be released later this year, will only be minor.
In the meantime, just what Microsoft is planning for its retro software – if anything – remains a mystery.
