Candela say the boat is best suited to a top speed of 30 knots – about 34 mph – and is comparable in both speed and range to a traditional alternative.

Candela Speed Boat AB is already taking orders for the Candela Seven and its website claims: ‘The world’s first electric boat with a range and speed on par with a traditional, fossil fuel boat.’

The ‘eBoat’ has a range of around 50 nautical miles (58 miles) and is ‘completely silent’, according to the manufacturer.

It is made of carbon fibre and is designed with hydrofoils to raise the hull above the surface of the water.

Both the front and the rear are fully retractable for trailing and storage and the boat also has a special mode for running in shallow waters.

Candela Speed Boat AB was founded in 2014 by its CEO Gustav Hasselskog.

According to Mr Hasselskog, production of the Candela Seven is well underway and customers have already pre-ordered 150 boats.

The first ten are expected to be dispatched to clients in early 2019.

Candela Seven is powered by lithium-ion batteries and take-off, cruising and landing are all automated.

Mr Hasselskog said: ‘Energy consumption is reduced by 75 per cent compared to a regular boat, allowing you to reach a range close to that of a gasoline boat.’

Candela Seven is currently priced at 2.2 million SEK (£192,000/$245,000) although the company plans on producing cheaper models in the near future.

Mr Hasselskog admitted that the fledgling company is currently ‘focusing on volume to reduce prices in the future’.

He added: ‘Today, there are no sensible electric boats on the market. They are either very slow or have no range. Therefore, customers come to us.’
