Hotel staff’s top tips for helping children settle into a holiday stress-free

Family holidays are exciting as you're exploring new places, spending your days relaxing and escaping your daily routine.

But while it's all very thrilling, for some children the sudden change can be a little unsettling, especially when you're far away from home and essentially living in a hotel for a week.

The good news is that there are some easy ways to get your children into the holiday spirit.

The team at the Lowry Hotel Manchester know a thing or two about how to help – in fact the hotel offers special check-ins for kids and welcoming touches such as whisking home comforts to the room before your children walk in.

Now, members of staff have shared their top tips on how to help your kids feel right at home and straight into holiday mode, from bringing home comforts to unpacking hacks.

Check out their top tips below…

Bring home comforts

Bring along as many home comforts as possible, such as your child’s favourite teddy and bedding – the familiarity can help them relax and get to sleep quicker.

Oh, and don't forget to bring extra games for kids so they don't get bored during evenings or any downtime.

Book a suite or adjoining rooms

Not only will this give you plenty of space for the whole family (and your luggage), but a suite with separate rooms or sleeping areas can be ideal if you're travelling with younger children who have early bedtimes as you can stay up for longer without interrupting their sleeping routine.

Call the hotel in advance

If your child is a light sleeper request a room far from the lift and lobby, or if you anticipate being kept awake for a bottle feed or teething, let the hotel know so that they can try to put you in a room less likely to disturb others.

If you need a cot for your room or have any specific requirements for your stay with the kids, then call the hotel in advance and let them know. This will ensure you have everything you need the second you arrive.

Get them excited ahead of time

Staying in a hotel is fun! Show them pictures of the hotel and rooms online to get them feeling familiar and comfortable from the get-go.

Pack a nightlight

Nightlights help kids navigate their way to an unfamiliar bathroom and add comfort and security.

Give them their own space

Unpacking and getting familiar with new surroundings can be important in relieving any potential stress or anxiety.

Let your children unpack and make a space of their own, such as somewhere to set their toys and a responsibility to look after their belongings.

Unpack when you arrive

It sounds like an obvious one, but if you're pulling everything out of a suitcase it can become messy and stressful.

Have your kids' stuff laid out so you can plan for the days ahead, and pick out outfits so the floor won't end up looking like a jumble sale.

Introduce them to staff

Make a point of introducing your children by name to the hotel staff.

Not only will this make them feel special it will also make sure that staff can easily identify your kids in the hotel’s communal areas.

Get insider tips on fun activities

Chances are you will already have searched out child-friendly activities and events near the hotel, but it's worth asking the concierge for extra tips as they may have recommendations you can't find online.

Have fun!

Remember to relax and have fun while you are staying at the hotel. Your routine won’t be exactly the same as home but remember to enjoy the extra time with the family and create some great memories during your stay.
