The item of clothing that could help you fall asleep 15 minutes faster

A simple trick could help insomniacs fall asleep 15 minutes faster – and it involves an item of clothing.

Wearing woollen pyjamas can help people nod off more effectively, scientists have found.

The material helps the body enter into a ‘thermal comfort zone’ which may then lead to a more restful sleep, the researchers said.

With the body temperature regulated, people can not only fall asleep quicker, but they can also have a longer and better quality kip, a study showed.

Researcher Dr Paul Swan, from the University of Sydney, told Sky News : "Not so long ago sleeping under wool bedding was the norm, and science is now rediscovering the benefits of sleeping in wool.

"Maybe it is not a coincidence because wool regulates your body temperature far better, keeping you in what is known as ‘the thermal comfort zone’.

"You therefore not only fall asleep quicker, sleep longer, but also have deeper, better quality sleep."

The researcher identified the importance of getting a good night’s sleep on both physical and mental health.

The study, in Australia, was carried out using 17 students and 36 older participants.

Those taking part went to bed in temperatures of around 17C.

Findings, reported in the journal Nature and Science of Sleep, showed that students wearing wool fell asleep four minutes quicker than those dressed in cotton or polyester.

And the older participants aged 65-70 who were wearing woollen nightwear were even more successful.

They managed to sleep up to 15 minutes quicker.
