If you’re plotting your Summer hair color plans, add this purple bob that has a magical rainbow hidden inside to your inspo list. Just when we thought rainbow roots — and multitonal hair in general — came and went with last Summer’s trend wave, a Russian colorist named Nanameuw just proved why it needs to stay.
In an Instagram post, you’ll see what looks like a gorgeous, single-tone bob — but when you lift up the top half of the hair, there’s a perfect rainbow painted underneath. Each section is as clean and vibrant as the next, and Nanameuw’s coloring technique keeps the hair from looking damaged, despite the level of lightening required for such a vibrant color payoff.
Allure first spotted this look, and Nanameuw told the site, “For this look, it is very important to first whiten the hair along the length, and only then applying the bleaching powder to the roots, so that the background of clarification is uniform throughout the length of the hair.”
After bleaching with a maximum of three percent lightener to keep hair healthy, she used a narrow brush (only one inch wide!) and worked in sections on dry hair to keep the colors from flowing into each other. She suggests processing and rinsing each color section before moving on to the next to prevent it from bleeding. Just to be safe, she wrapped each chunk of color in plastic or foil to further prevent any melding of shades into each other. The top purple layer was actually done after the rainbow bottom was painted.
It sounds like a pretty strategic and time-consuming process, and of course with this intense of a color process, a moisture-boosting and heat-protecting regimen is required to keep your strands intact. “To maintain color for longer, it is important to use a balm with a low pH,” Nanameuw says. It’ll keep your strands smooth and help prevent the dye job from fading quickly.
It’s definitely a commitment, but as you can see from the results, completely worth every mesmerizing minute.
