In one particular storyline, Sally breaks down while telling then husband on the soap, Kevin Webster, that she has breast cancer.

And shortly after, Sally began battling the illness off screen too.

Talking to the Mirror about how Coronation Street helped her bounce back from her cancer fight, Sally coined the show as a “beacon.”

“Corrie was a beacon actually. I realised how important my work is to me and I was desperate to get back, because as soon as I got back to work, I could try to put it behind me, which I think I have done,” Sally explained.

The mum-of-three, who found her own lump while filming scenes about breast cancer, continued: “I’ve got a few things that run through my mind occasionally about that time in my life, but generally I think I’ve put it to bed and work has really helped me on that.”

Sally, who has become the seventh-longest serving star on the soap hopes to be on the show as long as the likes of Bill Roache, 88, and Barbara Knox, 86.

She said: “When I look at Bill, Barbara and Sue Nicholls, they’re incredible. Nobody knows their lines better than them. I hope I’m still in the show in my 70s and 80s – if they’ll have me!

“I’m very sociable, I love coming in to work and I want to keep going as long as I can.”

However, despite being a household name and having appeared in more than 3,300 episodes, Sally isn’t so keen on watching herself on screen.

“I hate watching myself!” she said, adding: “I’m not a very confident person, so I criticise everything about myself and what I’m doing. I think of the thousands of ways I would have done the scene differently and I think ‘God, do I look like that?’

“All those things go through your head. It’s everything. I don’t like my voice or my mannerisms. My voice is so annoying – I don’t know where my accent’s come from! If there’s an episode and I’m not in it, I love it.”
