Gordon Ramsay has warned his teenage son Jack about the dangers of messaging girls online.

The celebrity chef told his 19-year-old son that the people he was chatting to on Instagram may not be who they say they are and could actually 'be his mother's friends in disguise'.

Ramsay revealed his worries about internet safety during an interview with GQ.

When asked what keeps him up at night as a parent, Ramsay replied that it was messages from 'fans' on social media, stating that these people are not friends and are actually strangers.

Turning to his university student son, Ramsay asked him if he was messaging anyone on Instagram.

The hesitant answer was enough for the dad-of-five to be worried enough to give his son a 'chat' about the perils of social media.

Chef Ramsay said: "I think the distractions that they have today on social media, I don't know what it is because they look at the charm on social media and all of a sudden you think that these people who follow you are fans.

"I hate that word fans, they are not, they are f*****g strangers.

"They sort of judge their life on what people say about them which is ridiculous."

Turning to Jack, Ramsay then says: "You don't message people."

It was the hesitation that betrayed Jack and Ramsay said: "You hesitated, that means you do."

Jack explained: "Well if they message first. I don't think you need to worry because you have taught me quite well when it comes to real friends, fake friends, how to approach the issue of social media.

"I have been taught quite well."

Gordon said back: "Yeah, I know but, so you message people back?

Jack sheepishly replied: "It depends who they are."

Shocked by this reply, Ramsay then says: "Really? So I put under all my handles, don't DM me because I have no interest."

He then adds: "So the one thing that keeps me up at night is Jack messaging individuals on social media."

Jack tried to defend his actions: "You are 19-years-old and this cool, good looking young girl messages you on Instagram. What are you going to do?"

Ramsay then shocked Jack and dropped his 'bomb': "That could be your mum's friend in disguise."

Jack replied: "I hope not, I seriously hope not."
