Countryfile host Helen Skelton, 36, tied the knot with rugby star Richie Myler, 30, back in 2013 and they share two sons together; Ernie, four, and two-year-old Louis. The presenter recently caught up with Louise Minchin and Annie Emmerson on their podcast Her Spirit, to discuss her experience on the recently ended SAS: Who Dares Wins and how it’s changed her family life.

During the episode, the mother-of-two revealed how leaving her two sons with her husband for the first time, while she competed on the show, had a positive impact on her family life.

She explained: “For me having kids, it doesn’t clip your wings, it gives you a different type of adventure to take, like you say you’ve got different priorities.

“When they asked me [to do the show] last year and I was like, ‘No, the kids are too little and I didn’t want to leave them’.

“I don’t like going away from them overnight.

“But, the other thing was, it was the first time ever that I left my husband in charge.

“I’m in charge and I do all the parenting, he’s a hands-on dad, but do you what I mean? I’m the one who does breakfast, dinner and tea and all the rest of it.

“To leave him in charge for a week, was a bit of… we needed to do it, it was good for both of us.”

Louise replied: “A leap of faith in some way, you’ve got to do that. I’m sure for them they’ve had a different experience,” to which Helen agreed.

She added: “And it’s made him appreciate me and in the same way, and this makes him sound bad but I don’t mean it like that, it’s just very easy if you’re the one going out to work, to come in and go, ‘Have you not cleaned up the breakfast dishes yet?’

“And you’re the mum whose been spending time with the kids all day, it makes you want to punch them.

“You’re like, ‘What?! Never mind the breakfast dishes, I haven’t been for a pee by myself’.

“And so, the flip side of that, it’s been really good because he now gets that.”

Thankfully for Helen, taking a break from her home life paid off as she made it to the final of Ant Middleton’s Channel 4 show.

The mother-of-two came in joint third place alongside Hollyoaks actress Nikki Sanderson.

The series was won by Lauren Steadman and Rudimental’s Locksmith.

During her time on the show, she opened up about her family life and how she wanted to make her children proud.

She said: “The most important thing to me is my family.

“If I go to work, I like to do stuff so when I walk in at night, I say, ‘Guess what I did today?’

“I’ve got a two and a four-year-old boy, so they want to know what I’ve done and they’re interested in me.

“Now I can go home and say, ‘I did something cool today’,” she continued.
