Kate Ferdinand may be approaching her due date, but she isn’t lying in bed all day waiting for her baby to arrive. In fact, she finds it hard to be lazy, saying, “My mind’s very active and I like to be doing stuff.”

Luckily, Kate has a new range with fitness brand Dare 2B to promote so she has plenty to keep her busy until the arrival of her baby boy.

As well as her work projects, the former TOWIE star has her hands full with husband Rio Ferdinand and her three stepchildren, Lorenz, 14, Tate, 12, and nine-year-old Tia. Since falling in love with former footballer Rio, 42, after his wife Rebecca died of breast cancer five years ago, Kate has dedicated her life to looking after the family – and it’s clear they’ve have become a tight unit.

Here, the blooming star explains why she won’t be putting any pressure on herself to lose weight after the baby is born and why lockdown has, in some ways, made pregnancy easier…

This is a busy time of year to be having a baby, Kate…

Yeah, there’s a lot going on around Christmas and, obviously, we’ve already got three kids so it would be nice if you could know when it was going to happen. But you never do, do you? I think that’s half the stress – not knowing when the baby’s going to come.

Have you reached the nesting stage where you want to clean everything in sight?

I’ve got to be honest with you, I’m quite like that anyway. You’re scaring me a little bit because I don’t know how much more extreme I can get with cleaning. I like things in a certain place and I’m very particular. I think the family are going to have a shock if it gets any worse!

You need to conserve your energy and sit on the sofa all day…

I’m no good at doing that. I find it quite hard to sit still and just do nothing.

You’re promoting the style edit you’ve done with fitness brand Dare 2B. Have you worked out during your pregnancy?

I think I trained for the first eight weeks – it feels like I’ve been pregnant for about five years! Then I think I stopped because I felt sick and I didn’t start again until the second trimester. Then I got back into Pilates and really enjoyed that. It helped with my back. I just felt like I was doing something. I launched [YouTube channel] Ferdinand Fitness with Rio then found out I was pregnant, so that was bad timing!

Did you find it hard to keep your pregnancy a secret?

It was lockdown, so I was quite lucky that I wasn’t seeing anyone. But quite a lot of my friends said they already knew, because after Ferdinand Fitness launched I stopped working out. So they had a feeling I was pregnant. It’s been quite nice in a sense because I haven’t had to cancel loads of plans and life is a bit more relaxed in lockdown.

Do you think you’ll be one of those people who is keen to lose weight as soon as you’ve given birth?

It’s all new to me so I’m just going to see what happens. I’m just going to be healthy and get back into exercise when it’s right for me and the baby. I love working out and I love doing it for my mental state and working out will always be part of my life. But I’m not going to put pressure on myself to get back to a certain size by a certain time. It would add too much stress. I just want to enjoy the time with me and the baby and go from there, really.

You’re so hands-on with all the kids. Is part of you worried they’ll feel left out when the baby arrives?

That’s not something I’m worried about. That’s something I hope they’ll never feel. I want to make sure I’m always there for them. I’m trying not to worry. I think he’ll just slot in and after a few months we’ll get used to family life with an extra little baby.

Have the kids had a say in what you’re going to call him?

Yeah, I think it’s important that we are all in it together. They’ve been involved in all the discussions.

Have you had any cravings during your pregnancy?

I haven’t really had any. I went off everything I normally like. I haven’t been eating as much as I normally eat I don’t think.

What’s your appetite been like during pregnancy?

I think it’s been different in every trimester. In the first trimester
I felt quite sick and I really went off meat. I love meat but I went off it completely. Then I started to feel completely normal and back to eating everything I love.

Are you sleeping well or do you wake up needing the loo constantly?

To be fair, I do go to the loo quite a lot, but it’s more that I think I’ve got a bit of insomnia. So it’s not that I’m waking up to go to the loo, it’s just that I’m awake. I haven’t really been sleeping that much.

Are you planning to breastfeed?

I’m just going to do what works for me and the family.
