Lil Nas X and Emily Ratajkowski have slammed Blackout Tuesday.

Celebrities decided to take a break from social media today (2 June) to acknowledge the Black Lives Matter movement and the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes during an arrest.

The idea saw Instagram users use the Blackout Tuesday hashtag and post a picture of a black square.

Some of the famous faces who got involved included Rihanna, Britney Spears, Kylie Jenner and Drake.

However Emily dismissed it as ‘the worst kind of virtue signalling’.

She tweeted a video that scrolled through the Black Lives Matter hashtag, with the majority of posts now black squares.

The model added the caption: ‘This is what you call amplifying a movement & black voices?!’

‘Your silence was embarrassing and now you can feel good about yourself while doing the bare minimum. This is the worst kind of virtual signaling.

‘And it’s straight up dangerous. The mainstream media isn’t blacking out today, the MAGA dudes in my mentions aren’t blacking out today. Clogging up the only reliable news source and communication channel ISNT HELPFUL.’

Meanwhile the Old Town Road rapper felt it was ‘the worst idea ever’.

He tweeted: ‘i just really think this is the time to push as hard as ever. i don’t think the movement has ever been this powerful. we don’t need to slow it down by posting nothing. we need to spread info and be as loud as ever. [sic]

An official autopsy and an independent autopsy ordered by Floyd’s family ruled his death as murder.

The private examination ruled his death as murder due to asphyxia caused by sustained forceful pressure to his neck.
