Smash star Jeremy Jordan is grieving after his 14-year-old nephew took his own life.

The 35-year-old confirmed on social media that his nephew Kaleb, affectionately known as Bubba, had died by suicide on Monday, 1 June.

Jordan, known for playing Jimmy Collins in Smash and Winn in Supergirl, wrote on Instagram: ‘Please take a moment amidst the chaos and say a prayer for my family. A couple of days ago, my 14-year-old nephew took his own life. We are devastated.

‘Teen suicide is a serious issue we cannot forget. Please talk to your children. Listen to them. Look for signs. Take action. They are the most vulnerable amongst us in these times of turmoil.

‘RIP Bubba.’

Friends and colleagues shared their condolences on the post, with Smash’s Joe Aaron Reid writing: ‘I’m so sorry, my friend. My condolences to you and your family.’

Shazam!’s Zachary Levi wrote: ‘I’m so sorry, brother. Praying for you and your whole fam. I can’t imagine the pain’, while Broadway star Laura Osnes commented: ‘Oh, no. My broken heart breaks even more over this. I am so sorry, Jer.’

Jeremy shared a GoFundMe for his nephew, which was set up by a family friend for Joseph Smith, Kaleb’s father and believed to Jeremy’s brother.

The fundraiser read: ‘Early this monday morning my beautiful 14 yr old son sadly took his life. I’m trying to keep myself together as I learn how to grieve with 16yo son and my 5 month old daughter holding my hand along the way.

‘Now of course I have to start making the big discussions how to give him a burial he deserves.  I know our family alone can’t pay for this. I hate that we have to ask for help.’

The appeal has already raised $11,743 (£9,329) for Kaleb’s funeral.

The teenager will be laid to rest on Saturday following a family viewing and a memorial service in Bossier City, Louisiana.

Jeremy – also known for his roles on Broadway in Newsies and Waitress – had only last week returned to social media to show solidarity for Black Lives Matter with a number of posts, following the death of George Floyd, the 46-year-old black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck during an arrest.

The star last year welcomed his first child, a daughter named Clara, with wife Ashley Spencer.
