When swooning over pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, it’s easy to get distracted by her super-glossy air of elegance. There’s never a hair out of place, she’s always dressed with the upmost sophistication, and if there’s a glimpse of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, or Prince Louis too, things only get more picture-perfect.

So it’s understandable that you may have completely missed a small but important detail about Kate’s appearance—even the most eagle-eyed royal fans may have never noticed a three-inch-long facial scar that the Duchess has had almost her whole life.

Confused? If you’ve never spotted the mark, the long scar sits on Kate’s left temple, just a little further back from her hairline. Due to her signature love of sleek up-dos and voluminous blow drys, it’s rare that the scar ever makes an obvious appearance, but it first came to public attention in 2011. With the sides of her hair pinned back, critics pointed out the scar and mocked what they thought was a bad hair extensions line. Kate Middleton? The Duchess of Cambridge? She would never.

At the time, a palace spokesperson had to step in and clear up the speculation. The exact story of how Kate earned her scar is still not public information and is considered a private matter but, explaining the essential bare minimum, they revealed to E! News: “The scar is related to a childhood operation.” Previously, sources have speculated that it could have been the result of anything from a serious operation through to a simple birthmark removal.

So there you have it. Not only is Kate Middleton beauty and grace personified, but she’s also got some badass scars to give everything a slightly cooler edge.
