When robbers broke into “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Kyle Richards’ home in December, they took more than $1 million of jewelry along with her entire collection of valuable Hermès Birkin bags.
“You think about robbery, you think jewelry, but when I found out all my bags were taken I was so shocked,” Richards, 49, told Fashionista at the grand opening event for Rebag, a store that buys and sells used luxury handbags in Los Angeles.
Among the extremely pricey pieces taken? An extra-special hot pink 28cm Kelly that Richards purchased with a famous shopping buddy. “I had just bought it in Cannes with Kris Jenner. We woke up in the morning and went to Hermès,” she explained. “And I was so excited about it; it was electric pink and they stole that.” Similar styles go for upwards of $20,000 on 1stdibs.
Besides those rare handbags, the robbers also made away with family heirlooms and a $150,000 watch belonging to the star’s husband, Mauricio Umansky. Richards previously said that the sentimental hand-me-downs were the hardest to lose.
“The material things, yes they can be replaced, but they also hurt,” she said. “I feel embarrassed to say that, but those are things that were either given to me by someone that I care about or that I worked really hard for. So it hurts no matter what.”
Despite the devastation, Jenner helped Richards get back some of what she was missing: “Kris was like, ‘Don’t worry, we’re gonna find another one!’ She found it, too, she found it in Paris,” Richards told Fashionista.
Richards said that she scoured Rebag to see if any of her personal items were sold to the store; although none turned up, the Real Housewife is warming up to the idea of buying used instead of new.
“I love so much this idea [of a reseller like Rebag] because, for me, replacing something I already had is so annoying. You don’t want to spend that money twice, so I can buy one of these that looks brand new and I don’t have to feel as guilty,” she said, adding, “I’m never going to have the collection that I had because I’m also scared after what happened.”
Thankfully, the reality star has since upped her home security to include “every protection imaginable.”
