Tear-jerking footage has captured a mum being given an engagement ring by her children for Christmas – after she sold her own to pay the bills.

Kim Rowell filmed the moment the present was given to her mum Denise on Christmas Day.

In the clip, Denise can be seen opening the box before bursting into tears when she realizes what she has been given.

“It’s beautiful and it’s pretty much exactly the same,” she says as Kim, behind the camera, wishes her a Merry Christmas.

“Thank you so much,” the mum added.

Kim, who works for the BBC, shared the video to Twitter with the caption: “My mum had to sell her engagement ring to pay our bills when I was a kid.

“Today we gave her a replacement.”

It has since been seen more than 747,000 and viewers have praised both the actions of Kim and her mum.

One viewer said: “Tears seeing this. My single mother sold her beloved typewriter (bank prize for opening most new accounts) to pay for my 5 yr old birthday & Christmas. What a beautiful thing to do for your mother. So moved on your & her behalf.”

Another said: “This is beautiful. But most of all, your mum, like so many mums (including mine) is a hero.

“Many mums up and down the country right now are giving up all they have or treasure for their children. Lets make sure mums don't have to do this in future. Give mums dignity.”

While a third added: “Your mum is a shining example to all those parents out there that claim they can't feed their kids. Raising a family is about sacrifice and priorities and your mum always did right by you. Such a good thing you've done there.”
