Transdr, a new dating app for people who identify as transgender, launched in the UK in March.
The free app has a similar format to Tinder: Users who swipe right on each other — meaning there’s mutual interest — can chat and set up dates.
But unlike Tinder, which is known as an outlet for casual dating, Transdr’s co-founder Sean Kennedy told the Huffington Post that it’s “a new place for trans people who are looking for serious relationships.”
The app’s description on Apple’s landing page, which includes words like “shemale” and “tranny,” has caused some controversy online.
“It fetishizes us,” one Twitter user writes.
A Transdr rep told the Huffington Post that those words were meant to improve their presence on search engines, adding, “We didn’t mean to offend people who care about this.”
Transdr isn’t the first dating app to cater to trans singles. Tinder offers 37 gender identity options for users.
“Life has been so hard for trans people because they have to overcome the social stigma of being transgender,” Kennedy says. “When it comes to dating, it’s even harder for them . . . They need a comfortable place to meet and date with other trans people without judgment.”
