Storm Ciara will be the worst storm to hit Britain in seven years when it makes landfall this weekend.
The Met Office has issued an amber 'danger to life' warning as gusts of up to 80mph are expected to blast the UK.
Forecasters have told Britons to expect widespread disruption 6pm on Saturday and midnight on Sunday.
Winds will increase through Saturday before turning "very windy" through the early hours of Sunday morning.
Storm Ciara is expected to cause damage to buildings as well as disrupt transport with cancellations to air, ferry and train services expected.
Weather producer Chris England told Sky News: "There is already an amber wind warning for SE England on Sunday, and yellow warnings elsewhere for wind and rain, which may get upgraded to amber later.
"It is quite likely Ciara will be the most intense storm since 2013, and will almost certainly cause some travel disruption and damage to trees and properties.
"Some coastal flooding is possible too, as the strong winds combine with a spring tide."
Heathrow scrapped 80 flights when 70mph gusts were forecast from Hurricane Gonzalo in 2014.
Blackouts and blocked roads are expected.
RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “Expect debris on roads and route closures. Never underestimate the danger of high winds blowing vehicles sideways. And slow down – no-one knows what's round the next corner.”
This is the third locally-named storm of the winter season after Storm Atiyah in December and Storm Brendan last month.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Frank Saunders, said: “Storm Ciara will bring damaging winds and heavy rain across the UK this weekend and we have issued a range of severe weather warnings giving people time to prepare for potential impacts of the storm.
“Winds will increase through Saturday across Northern Ireland, Scotland,northern England and Wales, before turning very windy across the rest of UK through the early hours of Sunday morning.
“Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected quite widely across inland areas, with even stronger gusts of 80mph or higher along coastal areas, especially in southeast England and northern Scotland.”
