Born Tim Bergling, the late Swedish DJ, who began his remarkable career at 16, became known around the globe as Avicii. In late April 2018, the music world was shocked when news broke that Avicii was found dead in Muscat, Oman. The musician was just 28. As his family and the world try to pick up the pieces, new details are emerging about the DJ’s tragic death and his tumultuous life.

It seems that even Avicii knew his time on this earth would be precious but short. This is the heartbreaking cause of the late DJ’s death.

Fame at a very young age

Avicii skyrocketed to fame in 2013 with his sensational hit, “Wake Me Up.”  However, the fast pace life and relentless hours of the music world began taking a toll on the DJ almost immediately.

In an interview with People he explained, “I’m tired, really tired, but I’ve been at it since I was 17, 18 years old — touring pretty much nonstop, 300 shows a year, and it’s been very hectic. I need a break.”

Even before his massive breakthrough in 2013, Avicii was struggling with alcohol addiction and health problems. The Los Angeles Times reported, “Avicii had a history of pancreatitis partly brought on by heavy drinking and had his appendix and gallbladder removed in 2012 before he released his debut LP.”

Though being submerged in a nightlife surrounded by drugs and alcohol would have been tempting for nearly anyone, it was Avicii’s struggle with anxiety that prompted him to turn to the bottle. In a 2013 interview with GQ, he explained, that he got “so nervous” before performing that he tried to numb himself with alcohol.

He explained, “You are traveling around, you live in a suitcase, you get to this place, there’s free alcohol everywhere—it’s sort of weird if you don’t drink. I just got into a habit, because you rely on that encouragement and self-confidence you get from alcohol, and then you get dependent on it.”

Trying to balance his health struggles, addiction, and his career were obviously beginning to take a toll on Avicii.

In his 2017 Netflix documentary, Avicii: True Stories, that has now been removed from the streaming platform, the DJ said, “I have told them this: I won’t be able to play anymore. I have said, like, I’m going to die. I have said it so many times. And so I don’t want to hear that I should entertain the thought of doing another gig.”

A confounding retirement

To save his own life and his sanity, Avicii officially retired from touring in 2016. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, he said:

To me, it was something I had to do for my health. The scene was not for me. It was not the shows and not the music. It was always the other stuff surrounding it that never came naturally to me. All the other parts of being an artist. I’m more of an introverted person in general. It was always very hard for me. I took on board too much negative energy, I think.

Unfortunately, being away from the music did not soothe Avicii’s soul the way that he’d hoped.

It seems that Avicii’s family and those nearest and dearest to him knew that he was struggling deeply with both addiction and the never-ending demands of his career. Just after his death, his parents released a statement. According to the LA Times, it reads,

When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most — music. He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace. Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight. Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive. We love you, Your family.
