Avicii’s untimely death has been attributed to suicide.
The music industry was shocked at the sudden death of superstar DJ Avicii last weekend. The 28-year-old, real name Tim Bergling, was on vacation with friends when he was discovered lifeless in his hotel room on April 20, 2018. Two autopsies were carried out this week, with foul play being ruled out. Now, his family released a statement confirming that the star committed suicide.

In the heartfelt statement, they pay tribute to the young music sensation who achieved dizzying heights of fame, according to Rolling Stone. “Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions. An overachieving perfectionist who traveled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.”
The statement goes on to detail Bergling’s decision to stop touring a few years ago after ongoing health issues. “When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music. He really struggled with thoughts about meaning, life, happiness. He could not go on any longer…Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed…We love you, your family.”
The “Wake Me Up” hitmaker was taking some time out with his friends in Muscat, Oman when he passed away, shocking fans and industry professionals. His ex-girlfriend posted a poignant tribute on her Instagram page, while other big names like Deadmau5 and Skrillex expressed their sympathy via Twitter. The Swedish-born musician first came to prominence internationally in 2011, but he worked on music since he was just 16. The ins and outs of fame took its toll on him, a self-confessed introvert. In 2012, he was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis caused by excessive alcohol use. Two short years later, he underwent an operation to have both his gallbladder and his appendix removed, leading to a deterioration in health. By 2016, he announced that he would be permanently retiring from touring and performing live, but still creating new music.
He released new music at the end of last year, telling Radio DJ Pete Tong that it was the first of three parts of a studio album. His documentary, Avicii: True Stories was released worldwide in October 2017. Undoubtedly, fans will be re-watching the film in a different light.
Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.
