You may know Billie Eilish for her colorful and outlandish wardrobe (designer logos and neon hues galore), or for her lime-green-dyed roots, but the singer ditches her grungy aesthetic completely in the new music video for her song, “xanny.”
In it, she sits in an all-white room in a simple cream turtleneck, matching pants, and a brunette lob—no bright colors, no Gucci emblems, and no green hair. The look is elegant but surprising for Eilish, who previously told BAZAAR.com, “I just like dressing out of my comfort zone. I want to dress in a way that if I was in a room full of people wearing regular clothes, I would be like, ‘Oh, I bet everyone’s looking at me.’”
However, it appears her style transformation only lives within the video—Eilish was sporting green and black pigtails at the American Music Awards last week.
Trumping her mini makeover is the fact that this project marks Eilish’s directorial debut. “Visuals are so important to me, and I’m very proud to be in a place where I can present my creative vision exactly as I want it. Thank you to everyone who has put their trust in me,” the 17-year-old said in a statement.
Despite the singer’s toned-down wardrobe, the video is far from lighthearted. In a dark and uncomfortable twist, various people put out their cigarettes on Eilish’s face as she sings, leaving burn marks all over her skin.
“xanny” appears on the singer’s debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which earned her six Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist.
