John Kapelos, best known for playing Carl the Janitor in The Breakfast Club, has been sued by Michelle Vlahos for allegedly bilking her out of $75K over the past 11 years. The actor, who also appeared in John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles and Weird Science, is accused of using his “powers of persuasion” to take advantage of the elderly woman.

TMZ reports that Vlahos claims that Kapelos “utilized his theatrical instincts” to convince her to pay the actor’s bills, as well as to purchase clothing, groceries and luxury items. The woman says she believed the money was a loan and expected to be repaid. Kapelo is being sued for the $75K, plus damages.

Vlahos is being represented by attorney Martin Goldman of Mendelson Goldman & Schwarz, a Sherman Oaks, CA, a law firm that specializes in commercial collections. Goldman, who has been practicing law since 1970, has been quoted saying, “Almost all parties, debtor, and creditor alike, do not want to go to trial. Everyone is strongly motivated to resolve the claim when a trial date is finally set. However, a creditor loses the settlement opportunity by deciding not to sue.”

The allegations seem odd considering Kapelos has an estimated net worth of $13 million. The character actor has recently appeared in The Shape of Water, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture this year, as well as on the TV series Suits, and The Expanse. Kapelos, 62, also teaches acting at the AIA Studios and manages the independent record label Carpuzi Records, which produces sound recordings.

The actor, who was born in London, Ontario, Canada, got his start in 1978 at The Second City in Chicago. He has been working consistently in Hollywood since 1981. Regarding his time filming The Breakfast Club in 1984, Kapelos recently recalled an awkward encounter with Emilio Estevez, one of the film stars, who— along with Judd Nelson— attempted to sabotage the actor’s scenes by making him laugh.

“So between takes, I looked at them and I said, ‘You know, you guys would have been great when Martin Sheen was having his heart attack on ‘Apocalypse Now.’ You guys would have been standing there stuffing pencils up your nose like you are with me and laughing as the guy is probably writhing in pain,”‘ Kapelos says. “And Emilio’s face went white… John Hughes comes up to me and goes, ‘Martin Sheen is Emilio Estevez’s father.’ And I didn’t know that! I didn’t know that… I apologized. (Estevez) never bought it. Never bought it.”

Kapelos has not yet responded to the allegations made by Vlahos.
