Johnny Cash wife: When did Johnny meet June Carter?

Ring of Fire Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash and June Carter, later June Carter Cash, had a relationship which has gone down in country music history. Before her, Johnny had four children with his first wife, but was swept away by the love of country singer June. But when did the singing couple meet and how did their relationship blossom?

Johnny met June backstage at the Grand Ole Opry, in 1955.

They started touring together with Johnny as a solo artist while June was part of The Carter Family in the early 1960s, and became very close.

On February 22, 1968, which was 13 years after they met and two years after his marriage split, Johnny proposed during a live performance in Ontario.

Speaking of their first meeting at the Grand Ole Opray, June wrote in the notes on Johnny’s 2000 box set, Love, God, Murder: “I can’t remember anything else we talked about, except his eyes.

“Those black eyes that shone like agates… He had a command of his performances that I had never before.

“Just a guitar and a bass and a gentle kind of presence that made not only me, but whole audiences become his followers.”

Both Johnny and June were in relationships before meeting, and they were both married when they met.

Johnny met his first wife Vivian Liberto in July 1951, when he and a friend in the Air Force stopped by a local skating rink.

Johnny left after a short courtship to continue his army training, but the pair corresponded via letter for a long time, many of which were published by Vivian years later.

They dated for just three weeks before he was deployed with the US Army to West Germany.

After his return from abroad Johnny and Vivian married on August 7, 1954, at St. Ann Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas, despite Johnny being a Protestant.

In 1961 the family moved to California. However Johnny’s career started to cause the family unit to break down.

Despite this, the couple had four daughters: Rosanne, Kathy, Cindy, and Tara, but divorced in 1966 after 12 years of marriage.

June was first married to Carl Smith, who she married on July 9, 1952, until their divorce in 1956.

With Carl she had her daughter, Carlene, and her second daughter Rosie was born to her and her second husband, Edwin “Rip” Nix, who she married on November 11, 1957.

She and Rip divorced in 1966, the same time Johnny and his wife divorced, after which she married Johnny in 1968.

June and Johnny married on March 1, 1968, in Kentucky, and had their only child together, John, on March 3, 1970.

Johnny also became step-father to June’s daughters from her first two marriages, who lived with the family.

The couple continued to work and tour together for years, right up until June’s death in May 2003.

Johnny died four months later in September 2003.
