Prince William and Kate Middleton told Kate Garraway they would have loved to give her a hug, if it wasn’t for Covid social distancing restrictions.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were moved when they discussed the heartache Kate, 53, has suffered, as the trio united to film a segment for the upcoming Pride of Britain Awards.

Kate’s husband Derek Draper, also 53, was admitted to hospital with coronavirus in March, and remains in a state of minimum consciousness after waking up from a coma earlier this year.

According to Mirror Online, the Good Morning Britain presenter met with the royals during a visit to a London hospital last week, where they discussed how Kate had been personally affected by the virus.

The resilient ITV star, who is mum children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, praised NHS staff during the meeting, crediting them with saving her husband’s life.

In a moment of tenderness, the publication reports that William told her: “You are doing amazingly though. If it wasn’t for social distancing we would both give you a hug."

The Duchess of Cambridge added: “I think you’re amazing to do this as I know you’ve had such a hard time yourself."

Kate, who has continued to bravely update ITV viewers on Derek’s condition since returning to her presenting role on GMB, spoke candidly about the experience with the Duke and Duchess.

She replied: “I think we are all doing OK but it’s very difficult because you can’t visit that often and the children haven’t got to visit Derek.

“And I think that’s a huge pressure for everyone – mental and physical health."

Making it clear she was grateful for the front line workers who continue to care for those suffering from Covid, Kate continued: “There’s no doubt that the NHS saved Derek, my husband’s life.

“He wouldn’t be here without individuals that have kept him alive. You can never find enough words can you, to say thank you for that? But I do want to."

The GMB presenter also asked after William’s father, Prince Charles, who tested positive for Covid earlier this year, but thankfully recovered in the weeks that followed.

William confirmed: “Yes, my father had it really early on."

The meeting will air at this year’s Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, which are taking place on November 1, celebrating the UK’s most noble and brave citizens.
