BBC Radio 1’s new Breakfast Show host Greg James has admitted that he wasn’t ready for the role when the position was last vacant in 2012.
When the station’s longest-serving Breakfast Show host Chris Moyles stepped down from the job, Greg was hotly-tipped to take over, but the role eventually went to Nick Grimshaw.
The 32-year-old is now about to embark on his first week in the prestigious job (he takes over from Grimmy on Monday, August 20), and insisted he’s glad he didn’t step into that eye-rubbingly early world six years ago.
“I absolutely wasn’t ready for it – I was barely ready for the drivetime show,” he told BuzzFeed. “There was a lot of chat about, ‘Oh is he going to replace Moyles,’ and actually I knew I was never going to replace Moyles because I had just been given this new show and I also didn’t really want to.
“But I read it and thought, ‘Oh shit maybe I do want to, maybe I should act like I do’ or something. And that’s just immaturity.”
He added that he didn’t think he quite met the criteria for the role back then – but he’s more than ready for it now.
“I just didn’t know myself,” he went on. “I didn’t know enough about the world and radio and now I feel like I do.”
It’s been quite the year for Greg, as this February he also got engaged to his long-term girlfriend Bella.
