Amazon plans to launch more than 3,000 satellites into space and further clutter up the night sky in order to provide broadband to its customers

Amazon is planning to launch 3,236 broadband satellites into space which they say will provide internet to most of the US and other parts of the world.

The company has requested permission from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to fire the satellites into orbit, as part of Project Kuiper.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ project seeks to provide internet to cover most of the US and under-served parts of the world. 

Company subsidiary Kuiper Systems filed its application with the FCC as part of a regulatory hurdle it needs to clear in order to launch the first operational satellites.

WHAT IS PROJECT KUIPER?

Amazon confirmed that its mysterious Project Kuiper will aim to position the e-commerce giant as a global ISP.

In the coming years it plans to launch more than 3,000 satellites into orbit where they will beam high-speed internet down to Earth. 

The satellites would enter low-Earth orbit where they will be able to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to million of people. 

Competition for the project has already arisen in the form of SpaceX’s Starlink program and the company OneWeb, which launched six satellites this year. 

OneWeb’s low-Earth orbiting satellite’s are capable of delivering up to 500 MBPS per user.

In April, billionaire Elon Musk received approval from the FCC to fly over 1,500 Starlink satellites at a low orbit of 550km (around 342 miles).  

Musk’s long-term plan focuses on launching nearly 12,000 satellites into orbit to beam internet coverage down to Earth. 

Last February, Sir Richard Branson’s One Web launched six satellites into orbit.

Together, the three billionaires involved with the space race renaissance, Musk, Bezos and Sir Richard Branson are all leading the charge looking to lead the charge in cargo missions, space tourism and global internet coverage. 

The online retailer asked the commission for permission to ‘launch and operate a non-geostationary satellite orbit system using Ka−band frequencies.’ 

The satellites will orbit 589km to 629km (366 to 391 miles) above Earth. 

‘The Kuiper System covers the area between 56°N and 56°S latitudes,’ the Amazon subsidiary told the FCC.

‘Accordingly, customers throughout [the] continental US, Hawaii, and all US territories will have access to Kuiper System services. 

‘So too will customers in many other countries within the coverage area. The Kuiper System will not provide FSS [fixed-satellite service] in the majority of Alaska, however, because the state’s high latitude is outside of the coverage area.’

Amazon’s plan for a nearly global broadband system was previously revealed in filings with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in April.

Amazon cited FCC studies that say 21 million Americans lack fixed, residential broadband and 33 million Americans don’t have access to speedy mobile service. 

Worldwide, 3.8 billion people remain without fast and reliable broadband service, according to the application. 

Internet access was declared a basic human right by the United Nations in 2016. 

Since then, several companies have since launched endeavours to provide coverage around the world. 

Starlink is SpaceX’s plan to provide broadband access across the world from space, and the company launched its first batch of satellites back in May. 

Billionaire Richard Branson kick started the race when his company OneWeb launched satellites for his high-speed internet space project back in February. 

Satellite communications have been in use for decades.

But Internet access through the technology is slow and expensive because the satellites cannot ferry data to and from the ground fast enough, increasing lag. 

SpaceX and its rivals are racing to field a new type of communications network. 

Instead of sending Internet traffic to just a handful of satellites, the companies hope to boost satellite internet speeds by using many cheaper satellites that orbit closer to earth, or in low orbit.

WHAT ARE THE PLANS TO SUPPLY THE WORLD WITH INTERNET?

Internet access was declared as a basic human right in 2016 by the United Nations. 

However many people around the world struggle to get online due to a lack of infrastructure or extortionate costs. 

Worldwide, 3.8 billion people remain without fast and reliable broadband service, according to the application. 

Several companies have since launched endeavours to provide coverage around the world.

Amazon has launched Project Kuiper which it describes as ‘a long-term initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.’ 

The firm has recently filed an application with the FCC to launch more than 3.000 low Earth orbit satellite into space to help with the project. 

The satellites will orbit 589km to 629km (366 to 391 miles) above Earth. 

The ROK GROUP will be launching a City Wide Wi-Fi network across 25 Indian cities.

The move comes in line with the Indian Government’s efforts to provide internet access to every Indian City.

Wide Wi-Fi Network will offer internet access across large portions of India and will be operated in association with BSNL. 

It was founded with one purpose, to bring high-speed internet to India. 

Elon Musk’s STARLINK project pioneers the use of low-orbit satellites to provide more efficient internet for the world.

SpaceX intends to start launching operational satellites as early as 2019, with the goal of reaching the full capacity of 4,425 satellites in 2024. 

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have approved the plan, which just requires SpaceX to launch 50 per cent of the satellites by March 2024, and all of them by March 2027.

They are the first in a constellation of thousands of satellites, designed to provide low-cost broadband internet service from low Earth orbit. 

FACEBOOK is working on plans for project ‘Simba’, named after the Lion King character, an underwater cable that will circle the continent with landings on multiple coasts.

 Facebook is in talks to develop an underwater data cable that would encircle the continent, according to people familiar with the plans, an effort aimed at driving down its bandwidth costs and making it easier for the social media giant to sign up more users.

GOOGLE‘s underwater cable plans are much further along, as it has confirmed construction plans for a cable connecting Portugal and South Africa. 

Google’s cable, named Equiano, will have 20 times the capacity of the most recent projects laid in the region and will first branch out in Nigeria—Africa’s largest internet market.
