Mystery as man sets up home under motorway bridge including funeral hearse

A funeral hearse and a weights machine have been hoarded under a motorway bridge by a man who has lived there "for months".

The mystery motorhome owner has set up a living space beneath the M65 in Darwen, Lancashire, complete with a beer keg, a wheelchair, a BMW car and a child's bike.

According to locals he has been making the sheltered area his own over winter and has made sure it is not without its home comforts and quirks.

The hearse parked at the side of the road has been decorated with a sign in the window that reads, "Darwen needs you".

There also appears to be a makeshift tool den, a heart-shaped welcome mat and a mannequin in the shape of a man's torso.

Yet not all residents in the area find the space quite so charming as one unnamed man said that he wants the area cleared.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "The motorhome has been there for months, it's taken up almost the whole side of the pavement underneath the bridge.

"It's annoying as a lot of people use that bridge for car sharing.

"I think someone has been dropping off scrap metal and all sorts for him, it looks like a tip – not exactly the first thing you want to see when coming into Darwen."

They went on: "I would've thought the police or someone would have moved him on by now, but no-one seems to be bothered."

But local councillor Dave Smith said public protection had been informed and it did not appear that the man was breaking any laws.

He said: "It's believed he was living on a piece of land in Lower Darwen but he seems to have moved under the bridge for some reason.

"Highways have said it is nothing to do with them as it's pavement so is a matter for the council – but it's not exactly a pavement really.

"Public protection have been informed anyway and they are dealing with it now, but if he's not breaking any laws then there's not much we can do, to be honest."

Nobody answered the door at the motorhome when approached by a reporter and a phone number in the windscreen appears to be a digit short.
