From a charming luxury lodge in Yorkshire to a Scottish mansion with marvellous mattresses: The 2018 AA British B&B of the Year award winners revealed
The AA has announced the winners of the 2018 B&B awards – and they include some seriously lovely lodges, from a romantic homestay in stunning Yorkshire countryside to a Scottish mansion with dreamy beds.
The British have the art of the B&B mastered, knowing all about how to create cosy, homely, luxurious environs – which makes those properties that have snagged a gong very special indeed.
The awards recognise some of the nation’s most remarkable B&Bs and dish out awards for the best in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The AA added: ‘All have beamed ceilings and seating areas, while one has a double spa bath and body jet shower. Guests will enjoy the soft towels and bathrobes, luxury Temple Spa toiletries, and a well-stocked fridge with fresh milk, water and cordials.’
The best in Scotland prize went to Cruickshanks Boutique B&B in Whiting Bay, North Ayrshire.

The judges were taken by the Cruickshank’s bedrooms. The AA said: ‘All bedrooms feature luxurious Hypnos mattresses, Egyptian cotton bed linen and comfortable hypo-allergenic duvets’
Rhedyn Guest House in Rhedyn, Cilmery, snared the best in Wales prize
The judges were impressed with the ‘imaginative menus’ and ‘delightful dining room’ at Rhedyn Guest House
It’s here that guests at the Rhedyn Guest House can eat ‘a hearty breakfast, including a selection of home-made preserves’
The judges thought it was dreamy.
They said: ‘All bedrooms feature luxurious Hypnos mattresses, Egyptian cotton bed linen and comfortable hypo-allergenic duvets. Each has a comfortable seating area, WiFi, flatscreen TV, and DAB clock radio with Bluetooth. Bathrooms feature overhead rain showers, bathrobes, hairdryer, and toiletries from Arran Aromatics.’
Rhedyn Guest House in Rhedyn, Cilmery, snared the best in Wales prize, with the judges impressed with its ‘imaginative menus’ and ‘delightful dining room’. It’s there that guests can eat ‘a hearty breakfast, including a selection of home-made preserves’.
‘Individually designed bedrooms’ that are ‘thoughtfully presented’, meanwhile, won the day for Causeway Lodge in Dunseverick in the Northern Ireland category.

Silverware was also made available for a handful of other categories.
The Temple Bar Inn in Hereford won Friendliest B&B of the Year, the Story of the Year went to Fosse Farmhouse and Unique B&B of the Year went to The 25 Boutique B&B in Torquay. Commenting on the latter, the AA inspector that visited said: ‘Imaginative, high-quality design with a comfortable, relaxed feel.’
The AA Restaurant with Rooms of the Year, meanwhile, went to the Long Melford Swan in Suffolk.
Simon Numphud, Managing Director at AA Hotel & Hospitality Services, said: ‘B&Bs are an integral part of the British hospitality industry, providing a unique experience and bespoke customer care.

‘The AA B&B Awards are an important date in the AA’s calendar, as we celebrate all that is great about B&Bs and highlight those that are constantly striving beyond what is expected.
‘I’d like to congratulate this year’s winning B&Bs for their continued hard-work and for delivering AA customers a fantastic service.’
Research by online booking experts eviivo, sponsors of the AA Friendliest B&B Award, found that in nearly 1,500 reviews of its top 100 properties, guests most frequently cited ‘friendly’ (17.5 per cent of reviews), ‘hosts’ (16.5 per cent) and ‘welcome’ (13.5 per cent) when praising an establishment, revealing the importance of these traits to a successful B&B.
