EasyJet boss under fire as 99.9 per cent of pilots say they have no confidence in him

EASYJET’s under-fire boss has lost a humiliating vote of no confidence from his staff.

Peter Bellew — forced to make two public apologies after bungled coronavirus comments — was targeted by pilots’ union Balpa as the airline bids to ditch 727 cockpit crew.

An overwhelming 99.9 per cent of pilots said they had no confidence in Mr Bellew's management or the way the airline is operated.

Unions accuse him of misjudging the pandemic’s start by criticising the “hype going on around the virus” and encouraging “business as usual”.

Turnout for this ballot was 95.7% and Balpa said: “This result clearly shows that there is a serious and widening rift between easyJet pilots and the airline’s senior management.

“It is absolutely vital that easyJet takes immediate steps to restore trust in the senior management team that has completely broken down.

"This includes treating the easyJet pilot community with respect and negotiating with the CC honestly and in good faith, as well as addressing the clear safety issues raised so far by this poorly handled consultation and the apparent lack of foresight which appears to be leaving easyJet trailing in the dust of competitors in the post Covid restart.

“We maintain that the 727 UK pilot job losses proposed by easyJet is a completely unrealistic figure.

EasyJet said: “We call on BALPA to focus on working constructively with us rather than on personal attacks which are not in best interests of our employees.

“Peter has a wealth of industry experience having been COO for Ryanair and CEO for Malaysian and sits on the EASA Strategy Advisory Board. Safety remains easyJet’s highest priority.”
