If your spending habits are politically-charged, you’re in good company. Turns out, plenty of people believe in putting their money where their mouth is, even if it means boycotting certain brands. That said, it’s no surprise brands like Trump hotels, for instance, have taken a noticeable nose dive.
Without hesitation, reviewers have been blasting Trump’s gold-clad palaces since the Donald took office in 2017. And one property, in particular, has earned the title of most hated Trump hotel of all.
The most hated Trump hotel, according to Yelp
The hotel in D.C. is the worst. | Trump Hotels
Yelp is the go-to site for hotel and restaurant reviews, and people are all too eager to dole out their opinions — good, bad, or ugly. So naturally, we took to Yelp in search of the most hated Trump hotel there is. (We looked at Trump hotels in the U.S. only.)
Here’s how each hotel ranks (as of April 30, 2018):
- Trump International Hotel Waikiki: 4.5 stars
- Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago: 4 stars
- Trump International Hotel Las Vegas: 4 stars
- Trump National Doral Miami: 3.5 stars
- Trump International Hotel & Tower New York: 3.5 stars
- Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C.: 3 stars
So, there you have it. The people have spoken, and the people think the Trump hotel in D.C. is the absolute worst. Here are 14 reasons why, according to those who’ve stayed there.
Trump isn’r known for his taste in food. | Trump International Hotel via Facebook
You might expect the food at any Trump property to be on point. Or not. Either way, the reviews we found on Yelp fell short in the quality cuisine department. As one person wrote,
Went there for some ribeye steak. It came in a martini glass filled with A1 sauce. Absolutely the foulest thing I’ve ever seen. A great American tradition has been ruined. The shrimp was rancid. It smelled like a sewer fluid placed under a heat lamp for 13 hours. The waiters were sucking their fingers in the corner.

Cleanliness was an issue. | Trump Hotels
Really, there’s no excuse on this one. Unfortunately, though, the cleanliness factor at Trump’s D.C. hotel pales in comparison to other high-end properties. According to one Yelp review,
The room had not been cleaned well and some brown stains on the spread. Walls thin and heard neighbors most of the night. Called front desk but no follow-up. Linens of cheap quality and scratchy. Room service for breakfast took almost [an hour], food not hot. Called desk again, nothing happened. Will never stay there again.

A total waste of an iconic, historic building
The stunning building shouldn’t have become a hotel. | Trump Hotels
Having originally served as D.C.’s post office, the building itself is home to a storied past. So, when the Trump hotel opened its doors in 2016, some were shocked — and disappointed — by the major transformation from historic site to glittery scene. One Yelp user writes,
What a tremendous waste of money, and as a former resident of DC, I’m appalled by what they did to such an exquisite landmark. It’s gaudy and stuffy and I’m glad we only spent 2 nights…I don’t think I could’ve taken much more of the snobby staff and overrated amenities. Yikes. Go to the Mandarin if you want a beautiful suite in the District.

There is no excuse of dirty sheets. | Trump Hotels
Cleanliness is an absolute must in any hotel room. And unfortunately for the Trump brand, reviews fall flat. As one comment claimed,
The people at the Check In Desk were very friendly and helpful. The room we were given was at the end of the hall. It was very small and dark, and had cheap looking furniture and lamps. The bathroom was not clean, and when we pulled back the bed cover we’ve noticed stained sheets. We only stayed here one night instead of the entire week, and in the morning we cut our stay short and found another hotel for the rest of our stay in DC. Quite disappointing.

The staff was very rude. | Trump Hotels
Clearly, there’s a breakdown in communication at this Trump hotel. And plenty of people claim the luxury aspect doesn’t translate in the way of customer service. According to one Yelp user,
I stayed here over a long weekend, but I wish I hadn’t stayed even just one night. Shortly after I entered, on my way to check in, I couldn’t help but feel unwelcome. The staff/concierge gave me suspicious, degrading looks. One staff incredulously asked me in a bitter tone, “Umm, can I help you?” After I made it clear I had a reservation, the person half-heartedly apologized. The rest of my stay was necessarily marred by this awful experience, and the tacky accommodations etc. couldn’t make up for it, especially given the ludicrous price tag.

People aren’t fans of the decor. | Trump Hotels via Facebook
Anyone who’s familiar with the Trump brand probably isn’t too surprised by this one. And if you, too, can’t stand tacky decor, you’re in good company. According to one hotel guest,
This hotel is a real disappointment. I was expecting something classy, but the place is so gaudy and tacky I can’t stand it. The food is downright awful, the service is terrible – I’m only staying here because of a free coupon, otherwise I’d be long gone. I really was looking for a better establishment ~ they didn’t even change the sheets today, and I’m 100% sure the comforter hasn’t been washed this year. Wish I could give ZERO stars!

Next: Not a VIP? Don’t bother staying here.
Service was not up to par. | Trump International Hotel via Facebook
Subpar service seems to be the theme here, or at least one of the common threads seen throughout Trump’s D.C. hotel reviews. And apparently, the staff are inattentive to the customers they perceive as unimportant. As one reviewer explains,
If all you need is a room to sleep in the insides of the rooms are fine, no complaints, although probably a bit expensive for what you get. The problem is if you need anything at all, such as talking to the concierge, or checking in at the desk, or getting a cab outside. The hotel staff is totally consumed with the politics and the VIPs to be concerned with any regular people. Regular people, be warned!

Roaches in the sink
Yikes. | Wi699/iStock/Getty Images
Roaches make you think of one thing and one thing only — a dirty place. And unfortunately, that’s exactly what one guest got when he visited Trump’s D.C. hotel. The guest described his experience as,
Essentially a facade of glitz and glam. We had roaches in our sink and the towels smelled like industrial cleansing fluid.

Next: Everyone wants a comfortable bed.
The bedding was not up to par. | Trump International Hotel via Facebook
Pay an expensive hotel rate, expect a good night’s sleep. But according to one Yelp user, that’s not the case at this hotel. His review reads,
Not great, a lot of glitz and very expensive, but all very contrived and overdone. I stay in the area a lot for work and thought I’d give this place a try. The room was nice but the fan was loud, the pillows were lumpy and it was one of the worst night’s sleep I’ve ever had. Coincidence perhaps as I only stayed one night for business, but I’d never go back. Far too many other reasonable and comfortable places to stay within walking distance.

Bugs in the bed
A pretty horrifying discovery. | Trump Hotels
Continuing on with the bug theme, here’s one more unappetizing pill to swallow. Turns out, this Trump hotel may be home to some creepy crawlers. Or, at least that’s what one guest found to be true. According to the Yelp review,
The worst! Stayed with my friend/partner and a creepy crawler was in the bed. Called room service, no answer. Went to front desk and they were busy being busy. What a dump for the money they are stealing! Never again!

The bathrooms were dirty. | Trump Hotels
There are plenty of scathing Yelp reviews that call the hotel out for not being clean. In one review, a past Trump hotel guest calls out the bathroom, in particular.
The building isn’t at all handicap friendly. To make matters worse, after I finally got to my room, it wasn’t clean. There was a stain on the bedding and the bathroom was just disgusting. It was also very noisy all night. I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

Unacceptable housekeeping services
The room was not serviced. | kadmy/iStock/Getty Images
Once again, when you’re paying top dollar for a hotel, you expect some level of service. But according to one review, that service is almost nonexistent.
… I called housekeeping before we left for a few hours to request that the room be serviced while we were gone. We returned three hours later and the room was not serviced. Once again, I had to call before someone finally showed up. There is a light that you can switch on indicating you want the room serviced. Obviously this is ignored. This place is HORRIBLE.

He’s known for his gaudy taste. | Trump International Hotel via Facebook
We already know the hotel has gaudy decor. And thanks to one review, we also know everything looks fake, cheap, and plastic.
Gaudy, cheap, and overpriced. Sure, maybe it’s not my style, but the whole place just felt fake, plastic cheap. Like a Disney version of expensive. Terrible sheets, both morning[s] I woke up with a red rash on my throat. Can’t comment on service, never used the concierge. But, wouldn’t say they went out of their way to welcome, either.

The hotel is seriously overpriced. | mj0007/iStock/Getty Images
Considering how much Donald Trump loves his money, it’s no surprise this place is anything but budget-friendly. And this Yelp review says it all.
Overpriced! Even though the hotel is new, it already looks outdated, like it’s straight out of the 90’s, incredibly tacky! The room was loud from traffic on the street below and I could literally hear people’s conversations in the hallway. The restaurants in this hotel are a joke! They’re more like something you would find at a mall food court …
