Members of staff reported a burst pipe containing raw sewage last week in the ground floor of the hotel on Justice Mill Lane in Aberdeen, which includes the car park and delivery area.

One member of staff told the Press and Journal: "There is literally human faeces, amongst other waste, leaking all over the floor."

The hotel workers are forced to use the area for deliveries as well as laundry services.

However, staff who refuse to work in the conditions have been threatened with Absent Without Offical Leave (AWOL) letters by the company.

The staff member said the problem was a "real safety issue" and felt the hotel should be closed until the problem is sorted.

After being forced to throw out her shoes due to sewage seeping into them, the hotel worker warned: "The fact we could be traipsing around in human waste is dangerous."

Recent guests of the hotel complained about the smell of the Travelodge.

One woman wrote on TripAdvisor on January 15: "The corridor was stinking of pee."

Another remarked two days later: "1st floor Corridor disgusting sour smell."

Staff have since added signs to the car park entrance to stop guests from walking through the area.

A Travelodge spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: "The welfare and safety of our customers and colleagues is of the utmost importance to us.

"We can confirm that work has already commenced at the car park and  as a priority we are working around the clock to get this isolated  issue resolved as soon as possible.

"We would like to sincerely apologise to our customers  for this inconvenience."

Recently, a disgruntled builder was caught on video smashing a new Travelodge in Liverpool after reportedly being owed "£600 wages".

The shocking footage captured the man using a digger to trash the hotel entrance.
