David Davis has launched an attack on Chancellor Philip Hammond and the Treasury for using ‘nonsensical forecasts’ and ‘mathematical mumbo jumbo’ in a bid to undermine a clean break from Brussels.
The former Brexit Secretary accused civil servants and ministers of jeopardising the country’s future prosperity by failing to recognise the opportunities presented by Brexit.
In one of his first interviews since he resigned a fortnight ago, Mr Davis said it was impossible for economic forecasts to properly take account of how businesses could be boosted by new export markets.
Former Brexit Secretary David Davis has unleashed another attack on the Treasury as Tory infighting continues
He told the Sunday Express: ‘You’ve got a Whitehall establishment which, putting it mildly, is not an enthusiast for the project. And certainly at the Treasury, which believes all these nonsensical forecasts.
‘Project Fear Mark III, I think it is now. The Treasury in total believes this stuff and I don’t. I simply think this is mathematical mumbo jumbo.
‘These are the forecasts which didn’t foresee the banking crisis, that got completely wrong the effect of the referendum.

‘If you believe the forecasts you tend to get rather frightened of this or that outcome. I think they’re too mechanistic and don’t take into account the way people behave.’
Mr Davis said the ‘primary instinct’ of the Civil Service and some ministers was to defend the status quo.
He added: ‘But if we’d spent the last ten centuries of our history defending what we have, we’d be a very much poorer country if that precludes things that can make us into a great country.
‘We’re going to have a massive growth in services, we are one of the world’s lead service exporters.’
Mr Davis, who quit as Brexit Secretary in protest at the Chequers agreement, said Theresa May needed to ‘start again’ on withdrawal plans and ditch her compromise, which would ‘trap Britain’s fingers in the mangle’.
‘We’re going to have to do a reset and come back and look at it all again,’ he said.
‘I think when we get to the autumn, if we are in the situation where we don’t have any degree of agreement, we’re going to have to start again.’
