Dr. Anthony Fauci says he “absolutely” accepts President-elect Joe Biden’s offer to serve as the country’s chief medical officer.
“Oh, absolutely, I said yes right on the spot,” the nation’s top infectious diseases expert said Friday morning on the “Today” show.
Biden said Thursday he’d asked Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to stay on in his role in advising the president on national health emergencies — a job he’s done under six presidents.
But he also requested that Fauci, a member of the White House COVID-19 task force, take on a bigger position.
“I asked him to stay on in the exact same role he’s had for the past several presidents, and I asked him to be a chief medical adviser for me as well, and be part of the COVID team,” Biden told CNN.
President Trump has butted heads with Fauci, at one point calling the 79-year-old health czar “a disaster.”
