Witnesses described seeing a blond man staring at Maddie McCann’s holiday flat four days before she was snatched – as e-fits bear striking resemblance to German suspect
- Photos of Christian Brueckner have matched description of man seen nearby
- Person was seen at resort in days leading up to girl’s disappearance in Portugal
- Witnesses told police about a blond male with a pockmarked face acting oddly
- Old e-fits of people acting suspiciously bear strong resemblance to Brueckner
The new Madeleine McCann prime suspect could have staked out the family’s holiday apartment for four days before she disappeared, it has been claimed.
Photographs of Christian Brueckner have matched the description of a man seen nearby in the days leading up to the girl’s disappearance in Portugal in May 2007.
Witnesses had told police about a blond male with a pockmarked face acting oddly outside the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz in the days leading up to her vanishing.

E-fit images were previously released of fair-haired men spotted by witnesses acting suspiciously around the resort in the days leading up to Madeleine vanishing
The first sighting was on April 30, 2007 of a man matching Brueckner’s description wearing sunglasses who was staring at the apartment at 8am, reported The Sun.
The second on May 2 was of a blond man who was seen acting strangely at the reception to the resort at noon despite having no obvious reason to be there.
Just an hour later that day, a witness saw a blond man with a friend visiting the Habana internet cafe which was about a five-minute walk from the complex.
Then on May 3, British holidaymaker Jayne Jensen’s sister had pointed out to her how it was odd to see two ‘single blond men on their own’ near the resort.
Ms Jensen told a Netflix documentary last year: ‘She was walking just slightly in front of me and then she stopped and looked back at me and motioned with her head.

‘I caught up with my sister and said ‘What was that about?’ She said, ‘Well, two single blond men on their own’, which made me chuckle. But they were wrongly placed.
‘And that was that, until later that day when we had heard that Madeleine was taken, it was only then, piecing back — who were these guys?’
A source told The Sun: ‘These sightings have been a mystery for years and have been the subject of numerous police appeals.
‘With a suspect now in custody it seems like they may have finally been solved.’
There had also been a rise in burglaries at the resort which peaked in the month before Madeleine vanished– with two in the same block as her family’s apartment.

And previous e-fits issued by police of people acting suspiciously also bear a strong resemblance to Brueckner, who lived in the Algarve from 1995 to 2007.
Scotland Yard issued two e-fits in 2013 of one or two men who were apparently seen ‘lurking around the apartments’ in the week leading up to her vanishing.
The first e-fit showed a man wearing sunglasses who was seen in the sighting on April 30 looking at the apartment and again on May 2 by the reception.
The second e-fit showed a man seen on the afternoon that Madeleine disappeared at about 4pm, who was coming from an empty apartment two down.
