Many pubs across the country are at risk of imminent closure after a major chain said it was calling time on multiple sites due to spiralling costs.

It means beloved boozers, including 'Britain's wonkiest pub,' could soon be closed.

Marston's Brewery has put 61 pubs up for sale following a financial review which saw it need to cut back on spending, in another hammer blow for the nation's pub industry.

The chain owns more than 1,400 pubs across the UK but plans to 'maximise returns' by focusing 'core venues', according to The Caterer.

Pubs in the Midlands, Yorkshire, Sussex and Wales have all been put on the market by the chain, with the 'leaning boozer of Himley' in Dudley among them.

The much loved watering hole was built in 1765 as a farmhouse but became a pub in the 1830s but now faces an uncertain future.

Now it faces an uncertain future amid fears it could shut up shop for good if no buyers are found.

Derrick McConell, 64, has been frequenting the pub for 20 years and told the Mail: 'It's a brilliant pub but it's had its issues like most despite it being such a unique place. I know they struggled following Covid and then had to fork out money on renovations."

The cost of running a pub in recent times has become extremely high, with many thousands struggling to make ends meet in midst of the soaring cost of living and increasingly high costs associated with serving alcohol.

Added to this is people's lifestyle habits are changing, with fewer people heading to their local year-on-year.
