The knife-wielding suspect who was shot dead by cops on Staten Island was a 50-year-old man who lived on the block where the fatal confrontation took place, police sources said Monday.

Officers encountered Faustino Dioso about 10:45 p.m. Sunday in a small alleyway between houses on Bridge Court near Fort Wadsworth, where he was holding a 14-inch knife, said cops, who released a photo of the weapon Monday.

Dioso tried to push past his wife and engage the officers, police said.

“Shoot me! Shoot me! Shoot me!” Dioso said, according to Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

Cops first deployed a stun gun, which did not subdue Dioso. They then fired about 10 to 12 times, striking Dioso, who died a short time later, cops said.

An officer also was hit and was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in critical but stable condition.

The knife was described as having a 4-inch wooden handle and a 10-inch blade.
