A man has died at a leisure centre in Tyneside.

Waves, on Whitley Bay seafront, is currently closed following the tragedy.

Emergency services were called to the complex, which houses a swimming pool, gym and soft play, on Friday morning, Chronicle Live reports.

Police say the death is not suspicious.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "At 7.43 this morning we received a report a man had fallen ill at Waves Leisure Centre in Whitley Bay."

She continued: "Emergency services attended but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene. There is believed to be no third party involvement.

"Enquiries are ongoing to inform the man’s next of kin."

Waves is run by North Tyneside Council.

A spokesman said it was closed due to "unforeseen circumstances".
