New film on Princess Diana and her divorce will ‘ruffle Royal family’s feathers’

A new biopic centering around Princess Diana and her relationship with Prince Charles breaking down will upset some members of the royal family, an expert has said.

The upcoming film, where Kristen Stewart plays the part of Di, will focus on the People's Princess and her marriage deteriorating over Christmas at Sandringham in 1991.

The film – called Spencer – is directed by Pablo Larrain, who is known for his 2016 movie Jackie, which followed Jackie Kennedy's life after the death of her husband, does not yet have a release date.

Royal author and journalist, Robert Jackson, says members of the family will unlikely be fans of the new Spencer film, writes The Express.

He told US Weekly: “They won’t like it, but they would have expected it. It is the truth.”

He continued: “I think the most important thing is how well the actress can interpret the role. We’ll have to wait and see on that.

“As for the photographs of her, I thought she looked remarkably like the photograph of [Diana].

“Having been someone who has met Diana and knew her fairly well, I thought it was uncanny, really.

“But we’ll just have to see.

“I think what’s more important is the authenticity of the portrayal, and we’ll have to see how that develops because my understanding is it’s going to be a good script and it’s going to be a good premise, but it might not necessarily have actually happened in the way they’re saying.”

The royals have recently dealt with the latest series of Netflix's The Crown, which was widely interpreted as a negative portrayal of the Royal Family's relationship with Princess Diana.

Netflix rejected calls to add a disclaimer to The Crown to state it was a drama and not a documentary.

A statement from the streaming giant said: “We have always presented ‘The Crown’ as a drama — and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events.

“As a result we have no plans — and see no need — to add a disclaimer.”

Princess Diana's brother, Earl Charles Spencer also called for a disclaimer to the show.

He said: “I think it would help ‘The Crown’ an enormous amount if, at the beginning of each episode, it stated that ‘this isn’t true but it is based around some real events.

“I worry people do think that this is gospel, and that’s unfair.”
