The al-Qaeda-linked Somali terrorist group Al-Shabaab announced a ban on single-use plastic bags because they’re “a serious threat to the well-being of both humans and animals,” the BBC reported.
The militant Islamist group — which also barred logging rare trees — has been accused of massacring thousands of people in attacks ranging from truck and hotel bombings to stoning a woman they suspected of adultery, according to the UK Independent.
One of the group’s leaders, Mohammed Abu Abdullah, unveiled the eco-friendly new policy on a jihadist-operated radio show last week. He didn’t outline how the group expects to enforce its bag ban — but the fear it invokes will likely suffice, the paper reported.
Despite their ruthlessness, Al-Qaeda-linked groups have long had a soft spot for the environment.
In 2011, when US forces raided Osama bin Laden’s hideout, they found a letter urging world leaders to go green. Bin Laden wrote that climate change is a “catastrophic” problem that needs to be addressed, according to Globalnews.ca.
Al-Shabaab is accused of planting a truck bomb that killed more than 300 people in the Somali capital of Mogadishu in October 2017. The group publicly stoned to death a 30-year-old woman suspected of cheating on her husband the same month.
