A Pennsylvania man who admitted killing his sister-in-law during a squabble over rent money was sentenced this week to up 40 years in state prison.
Timothy Alva Neff, 57, was sentenced by a judge Thursday to 20 to 40 years in a state lockup as part of a plea agreement after pleading guilty in connection to the May 2019 slaying of his 62-year-old sister-in-law, Agnes Rae Neff, PennLive.com reported.
Neff pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in September, admitting he stabbed his sister-in-law in the back at the Clinton County home they shared in Rote with Neff’s brother, The Record-Online reported.
Neff’s brother, William, testified at a preliminary hearing that he left a note for Timothy saying that he wanted the $700 rent paid in full at the beginning of each month, PennLive.com reported.
William later returned home and found that the note had been changed from $700 to $400, with the higher amount crossed out, according to the outlet.
Both brothers later argued about the money, and during their escalating tiff, Timothy turned his aggression on his sister-in-law, Agnes Neff, as she was preparing dinner, William Neff testified.
Timothy then allegedly stabbed Agnes in the back as she tried to get up while holding onto a fireplace ledge, his brother recalled.
Agnes was pronounced dead at the scene, The Record-Online reported.
Timothy ran out of the home and was arrested three days later. He had been held without bail since May 2019. His sentence also included a concurrent 5- to 10-year sentence for a probation violation in connection to a 2005 aggravated assault conviction, according to PennLive.com.
