A DELIGHTED midwife beamed with pride after a truly special delivery — helping her sister give birth to her baby nephew.

Laura Paterson, 36, was at sister Leann Zwart’s side when she gave birth.

And she admitted that after helping bring hundreds of babies into the world, it was one of the first times she had a tear in her eye.

Laura, from Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire, said: “All births are special but this one was just a magical moment.

“It was the highlight of my career and I don’t think anything will beat it – unless Leanne has another baby. It’s a day I’ll never forget.”

Nurse Leanne, 34, said: “She was absolutely amazing – the perfect midwife. And I’m not just saying that because she’s my sister.

“She was so professional and on top of everything. But when she’d made sure we were both okay she she was able to be his auntie for a moment and got a bit emotional.”

Mum-of-three Laura missed out on being by her sister’s side when she gave birth to daughter Poppy four years ago because she was off on her own maternity leave.

So when Leanne fell pregnant again talks started at an early stage about her sibling being the midwife.

Leanne and husband Fraser, 33, got a tour of the Angus Birthing Unit in Arbroath, and even did a timed test drive.

On September 1, the mum-to-be was six days late but still didn’t think anything was happening.

Laura did her daily check-in to see if the baby was on his way and popped into the house.

Pregnant mum woke from Covid coma to discover she had given BIRTH

She decided they should make their way to the unit, and within 40 minutes of getting there little Harry was born, weighing in at 9lbs 7ozs.

Leanne said: “If it wasn’t for Laura I probably wouldn’t have made it to the hospital in time. I wasn’t in a hurry.

“The whole thing was just so calm and super-chilled. We even took a selfie of ourselves in the car on the way down.”

The labour lasted for a total of about two hours before Harry was born in the birthing pool.

Dad Fraser, who got to cut the cord and lift him out of the pool, said: “It was so good. We were more at ease with Laura being there with us.”
