Shopper is seriously hurt in Christmas car park chaos as a hired Citroen RAMS its way through other vehicles as have-a-go heroes battle to stop the driver fleeing

  • The incident happened at a Tesco store in Rickmansworth on Sunday afternoon
  • Police believe the car driver had been trying to steal alcohol from the superstore
  • Several people were run over by the Citroen C3 in the shopping centre’s car park
  • Police confirmed the car was owned by a hire company and had been rented out 

Police are searching for a pair of suspected thieves who ran down several people in a shopping centre car park after stealing alcohol from the store. 

Shocking footage shows the pair trying to escape in a Citroen C3 hire car when irate shoppers try to stop them. 

One person was rushed to hospital in a serious condition. A second person suffered minor injuries. In response, witnesses start attacking the car, breaking its rear window and denting several of its panels.

The driver had been accused of stealing alcohol from Tesco in Rickmansworth 

Passers by attacked the car after the driver used it to ram through people in the car park

The incident happened at the Tesco store on Harefield Road in Rickmansworth on Sunday afternoon at 1.57pm. 

Some of the shoppers rammed the side of the car with trolleys.  

Footage of the incident was shared widely on Facebook. Shoppers shouted at the car to stop while the driver manoeuvred in an aggressive fashion. 

According to Hertfordshire Police: ‘It’s believed the driver and passenger were involved in an incident inside the store moments before the collision, where a person was challenged by the store’s security after attempting to steal alcohol.

‘Officers are continuing to work to locate the vehicle and its occupants.’ 

Police confirmed that two people were taken to Watford General Hospital, one of whom is in a serious condition.  

Witnesses are asked to call PC David Johnson of the Road Policing Unit on 101, quoting ISR 397 of December 23.
