This is the shocking moment a thief steals a woman’s car as she cleans it at a petrol station.

Lauren McCauley washes her silver Volkswagen Golf at a Jet garage in Birmingham when the crook strikes.

The 24-year-old, who lives in the city, uses a vacuum cleaner to tidy the vehicle on the shop’s forecourt in footage captured yesterday.

She cleans the back-left passenger seat of the car as another customer moves around the side of the station.

A man wearing a black top creeps up to the 2016-plate car and gets on to all fours as he crawls towards it.

The suspicious shopper reaches the driver’s side window and grabs the door handle, waiting to sneak into the vehicle.

He opens the door and slides into the driving seat, surprising Ms McCauley who had not spotted him.

She jumps back from the car as it jolts forward, before she walks away and throws her hands into the air in despair.

She makes a last-ditch attempt to run after the Golf, but the thief has already got away despite the boot hanging open.

Ms McCauley stands in the forecourt with her hand on her head as she looks around, dazed by what has happened.

It is understood her bank cards as well as other possessions including her phone was left in the car.
