A woman is fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a police van responding to a 999 call.
The woman was hit by the van in Streatham High Road, south London shortly after midday today.
A major road was closed off in both directions following the accident, causing widespread transport disruption.
London Ambulance Service said they were called to the scene and an Air Ambulance was also in attendance.
Joseph Figueiredo told MyLondon: ‘Unfortunately a woman was standing on the central reservation and didn’t see the emergency vehicle coming. I witnessed the impact and it must have been at about 30mph.
‘The police officers got out immediately and attended to the young woman, at one point pumping her chest. I could see that she was bleeding heavily from the head.
‘Luckily staff from the pharmacy came out to help. The police started clearing people [out of the road] after about 20 mins so I had to leave but by that point an ambulance had arrived. [I’m] praying she makes a full recovery.’
