Can I grow garlic from a clove and what’s the best month to plant them?

SOME think that growing your own vegetables is a lot of work and expensive.

Well, in reality for some vegetables such as garlic, it could be money-saving and pretty easy too.

Can I grow garlic from a clove?

Yes, you can and it is so easy too.

From one bulb of garlic, you can get several garlic cloves which will then grow and save you lots of money if you use garlic a lot.

You can buy a garlic bulb from the grocery store but if you want to make sure to have the certified virus-free bulbs, you should buy them from a garden centre or seed supplier.

If the clove started to sprout, don't worry about it, you can still plant it.

As long as the clove is not damaged, you can plant and guarantee yourself healthy crops.

You also need to consider the soil to plant your cloves in.

They should be planted in loose soil with good drainage.

Make sure not to expose your plant to soggy conditions or much water or else it'll rot.

If your soil is too soggy or is heavy clay, add some sand before planting or grow the garlic in raised beds or pots.

Try to expose the garlic to as much sun as possible to have the best bulbs produced.

If you don't have much sun, especially since in the UK we rarely see it, the plants will still grow but the garlic will probably be smaller.

How do you grow garlic?

Now that you know what you need to grow garlic, let's learn how to do it.

Here is a step-by-step guide to growing your garlic:

  • Prepare your soil by removing any weeds, digging over it and raking the surface to even it out.
  • Using a trowel, create a shallow trench in a straight line.
  • The cloves do not need to be peeled. It's good to have the skin around it because it offers protection from bacteria and prevents it from emerging a sprout before roots are formed.
  • Place each clove an inch below the surface of the soil and make sure that the pointed end of the clove faces upwards.
  • Leave a space of at least 10-15cm between each clove so that each of them has space to grow and they do not compete with each other for nutrients.
  • Once that is done, fill the trench again.
  • While your plant is growing, make sure to get rid of any weeds that might grow on top, as these will get in the way of growing healthy crops.
