After a turbulent year under scrutiny over the glaring lack of diversity among its membership, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is announcing the nominees for the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards.
Earlier this year, the HFPA came under fire for not having any Black members in its roughly 100-person organization, accepting expensive gifts to sway their votes and other unethical behavior. Studios and publicists called on talent to boycott the awards body until it made meaningful changes, and NBC canceled the 2022 telecast for the Globes.
Since then, the HFPA has diversified its ranks, revamped its bylaws, banned gifts, restricted paid travel and started undergoing significant foundational change. In a letter obtained by Variety last week, HFPA President Helen Hoehne revealed that the 2022 ceremony will be focused on the HFPA’s philanthropic efforts, and she invited celebrities to participate in announcing the nominations, like typical years. However, the 2022 Golden Globes will look different than usual years as a cloud still hangs over the HFPA.
Some of the major contenders at this year’s Golden Globes for film are expected to be “Belfast,” “Tick, Tick … Boom,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog,” “West Side Story,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Being the Ricardos,” “Nightmare Alley” and “CODA.”
On the TV side, the frontrunners include “Succession,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Reservation Dogs,” “The Other Two,” “Insecure,” “Evil,” “Yellowjackets,” “Squid Game,” “The Great” and more.
