Who was Officer Wilbert Mora?

ON January 25, 2022 it was announced that a second police officer had died after being severely injured in Harlem.

Officer Wilbert Mora, who was injured at the scene of a shooting, had been fighting for his life since January 21, 2022, and passed away four days later.

Who is Officer Wilbert Mora?

Mora was an officer for the New York City Police Department who had been with NYPD for four years.

He was a 27-year-old officer who was "devoted to the community" an article in AP News stated.

On Saturday, January 22, 2022, Mayor Eric Adams said that Mora was still "fighting for his life," according to The New York Times.

Officer Mora lost the battle after fighting a serious head wound and passed away January 25.

Commissioner Sewell of the NYPD said of Mora, "It’s with great sadness I announce the passing of Police Officer Wilbert Mora."

Her post on Twitter continued,"Wilbert is 3 times a hero. For choosing a life of service. For sacrificing his life to protect others. For giving life even in death through organ donation. Our heads are bowed & our hearts are heavy."

Jason Rivera, who worked with Mora on Friday night, was fatally shot at the scene and was only 22 years old.

What happened to Officer Wilbert Mora?

Mora and Rivera were responding to a call on January 21 in Harlem, New York City when they were both shot.

According to AP News, Mora suffered an injury to the head on Friday night.

"Rivera and Officer Wilbert Mora were shot Friday night while answering a call about an argument between a woman and her adult son."

The news outlet reported that the medical examiner ruled Rivera’s death a homicide on Saturday.

The autopsy revealed that Rivera died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso.

"Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, visited Mora and his family in the hospital and gave the wounded officer a blessing, according to a spokesman the archdiocese," AP News wrote.

Mora was in critical condition in the hospital since suffering the gunshot wound Friday. The last update on his status came Saturday before eventually the announcement for his death came on Tuesday the following week.

The NYPD officer had undergone two operations according to Saturday's reports.

Who is Lashawn J. McNeil?

Lashawn J. McNeil, 47, is the man who officials say reportedly shot the officers on Friday night.

McNeil was in critical condition after being shot by a third NYPD officer after responding to the domestic disturbance call inside his mother's Harlem apartment.

McNeil died from his injuries after being shot in the right arm and head by a third cop, Sumit Sulan.

AP News reports that this incident is one out of many as of late in New York City.

"The shooting is the latest in a string of crimes that have unnerved the nation’s largest city," the outlet wrote.

When Rivera and Mora approached the bedroom, McNeil allegedly opened fire, striking both officers.

According to reports, officials believe the gun was purchased illegally in Baltimore.

They are still investigating to determine the origin of the high-capacity ammo clip.
