10 awkward moments from the 2023 Grammy Awards – Harry Styles trip to Madonna scolding

The Grammy Awards is one of the biggest nights of the year for the music industry as top artists, producers and executives gather to celebrate the best releases of the past 12 months.

The 2023 awards saw pop legend Beyonce win a record-breaking 32nd Grammy, Kim Petras make history by securing the first award for a transgender woman and Viola Davis became the third black woman in history to secure the coveted EGOT status.

But, for all of the highlights, there were still plenty of less than glam moments throughout the evening.

Here are just a few of the most awkward…

Beyonce gets stuck in traffic

Queen Bey might be one of the world’s most recognisable superstars, but that doesn’t mean she’s immune from the woes of getting stuck in traffic.

The 41 year old singer missed out on accepting the Grammy for best R&B song for her hit Cuff It due to the delay.

The star eventually made it on stage – just in time to accept her record-breaking 32nd Grammy for Best Dance Album.

Handing the star her Grammy, host Trevor Noah made no attempt to spare her blushes and joked: "I was shocked to find out traffic had stopped you, I thought you travelled through space and time!"

Doja Cat forgets her 'gracious loser face'

Doja Cat missed out on the Grammy for Best Pop Duo to Sam Smith and Kim Petras, who won with their hit Unholy.

Rather than smiling, Doja, who was nominated for her hit I Like You (A Happier Song) with Post Malone, simply took a sip of her drink as Sam and Kim headed on-stage.

And eagle-eyed fans noticed that she didn’t exactly look thrilled for the pair.

One wrote: "I can't get over Doja Cat's reaction to Unholy winning" while another joked that the singer and her fans were "coming for the Grammys."

Harry Styles awkwardly trips

Harry Styles' performance of his hit song As It Was probably wasn't quite as seamless as the artist had hoped.

The 29 year old pop star proved he was only human as he awkwardly tripped in the midst of the performance.

The star brushed off the clumsy incident, however, and valiantly carried on.

The Hip-Hop tribute gets cut short

Hip-Hop devotees were left fuming when the tribute section for the genre was cut abruptly short.

The Grammys cut to an ad break in the middle of the section, which was dedicated to 50 years of the genre, leaving fans at home furious.

However, confusion ensued when others insisted that they had seen the whole bit and it later emerged that the poorly timed break was only aired in Atlanta, with one Twitter user joking that “this city always fails me.”

Another fan tweeted: "So y'all telling me that when the Grammys cut to a COMMERCIAL in the MIDDLE of the Hip Hop tribute, Big Boi performed? And, the commercial break happened in Atlanta ONLY??"

Ben Affleck can’t wait to get home

Actor Ben Affleck might be more comfortable at the Oscars, as he looked desperate to make an escape during last night’s Grammy Awards.

Sitting with wife Jennifer Lopez, fans joked on Twitter that you could see the 50 year old star’s “batteries draining in real time.”

Another wrote that he looked like he would “rather be anywhere else” during Stevie Wonder’s performance.

Trevor Noah gets political

Jill Biden might seem like an unlikely Grammys presenter, but the first lady took to the stage to present the award for Song of the Year.

However, host Trevor Noah couldn’t help but get political after her appearance and made an awkward dig at her husband Joe Biden’s recent controversy.

The comedian joked that: “Nobody knows who is going to win Album of the Year. Unlike the government, the Grammys keeps its classified documents classified.”

Madonna gives the crowd a telling off

Pop legend Madonna clearly spent a while working on her material, and couldn’t hide her disappointment when it seemingly didn’t land.

She said: "This is what I've learned after four decades in music. If they call you shocking, scandalous troublesome, problematic, provocative or dangerous, you're definitely onto something!"

However, her sage words of wisdom were met with silence and 64 year old awkwardly joked “that’s where you make noise,” prompting the crowd to finally burst into applause.

Adele needs a content warning

Adele is no stranger to a feisty break-up song, but couldn’t hide her shock when South African comedian Trevor Noah explained the content of SZA’s hit song Kill Bill.

Trevor joked that there would be “no theme song about killing your ex” had SZA pursued her original ambition to become a Marine Biologist.

And viewers couldn’t help but spot Adele in the background, who was left open mouthed and seemingly turned to the man next to her for explanation.

The Academy gets very confused on Instagram

The Recording Academy, a collective of musicians who host and organise the Grammys, made a very awkward error on Instagram when they mistook ATL Jacob for Steve Lacy.

In their post congratulating the latter for his Best R&B Album win, they accidentally attached a snap of music producer ATL Jacob.

The post was, of course, hastily taken down by the organisation.

Kim Petras tries to grab her Grammy

When Kim Petras and Sam Smith secured a Grammy for their hit song Unholy, Kim – who is the first transgender woman to win the award – was visibly over the moon.

But when she went to take the Grammy from Smokey Robinson, the presenter passed her straight by and handed it to her collaborator Sam Smith.

The moment was rectified, however, when Sam asked Kim to accept the award on their behalf and stood behind her as she made an emotional speech.
