A look back at ripped Rob McElhenney's fitness journey

After he showcased a better physique than the Wrexham players at their Vegas pool party, a look back at Rob McElhenney’s fitness journey including THAT 60lb weight gain

Rob McElhenney certainly stood out as he showcased his ripped physique among the Wrexham FC players this week as they posed at a pool party.

The It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star, 46, and his Wrexham co-owner pal Ryan Reynolds, also 46, treated the club to an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas following their historic promotion to League Two.

And as he posed alongside the shirtless players in a recent Instagram snap, Rob could’ve easily been mistaken for a sportsman as he showed off his muscle-bound frame in a pair of navy swim shorts.

While the actor proudly sports a hunky physique, it hasn’t always been the case as at one point in his career, he sported a much fuller frame after piling on 60lb for his role in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

In fact, Rob has gone through multiple body transformations through 15 seasons of the FX series, going from skinny, to bloated to ripped – with several snaps documented on his social media.

In 2011, the star revealed that he’d opted to pile on the pounds to embody a heavier version of his character Ronald ‘Mac’ McDonald between the sixth and seventh seasons of the long-running comedy show.

He told in an interview with AV Club that he wanted to make the change because of shows like Friends and The Big Bang Theory, with characters looking better and having more make-up the older they got.

Rob said: ‘If anything, when you’re in your late 20s, early 30s, and then mid-30s, you’re getting less attractive.’

To gain his weight, he worked with a sports nutritionist and ate five 1,000 calorie meals a day including proteins like chicken, rice and vegetables.

Eventually, Rob began to loosen his diet, opting for unhealthier choices like ice cream, telling Men’s Health magazine: ‘It turns out if you drink a gallon of ice cream every day you will start to gain weight.’

He also hit the weights, adding to the publication: ‘I started lifting really heavy because it was building up ridiculously fit muscle and the fat would just sit on that. So, I put on the weight in about two and half months – three months.’

However, by season eight of the show, Rob was back to his usual weight, having shed the pounds by ditching his milkshake habit and keeping up his weight lifting routine, with the star dropping the first 20lb in just over a week.

The actor then went onto undergo one of his biggest body transformations for season 13 in 2018, where he followed a special diet to gain his shredded body.

Easy-peasy? The podcaster went on to make light of his body change with an Instagram post in September 2018 in which he explained to his followers just how he got his Adonis-like body

Rob told at the time that he made the change to highlight the huge transformations male actors have to go through for roles.

Unlike his last weight change, Rob had to work even harder to form his ripped figure, undergoing an intensive fitness routine with Channing Tatum’s personal trainer for the Magic Mike films – who put him through his paces six days a week.

He also cut out alcohol and bulked up with lean chicken breasts, while also prioritising his sleep.

Alongside a before and after snap, he quipped: ‘Look, it’s not that hard. All you need to do is lift weights six days a week, stop drinking alcohol, don’t eat anything after 7pm, don’t eat any carbs or sugar at all, in fact just don’t eat anything you like, get the personal trainer from Magic Mike, sleep nine hours a night, run three miles a day, and have a studio pay for the whole thing over a six to seven month span.

‘I don’t know why everyone’s not doing this. It’s a super realistic lifestyle and an appropriate body image to compare oneself to. #Hollywood.’

It comes after Rob and his wife Kaitlin played the parents during their lavish holiday in Las Vegas as they applied suncream on their Wrexham stars in the pool – with the team preparing to jet home from their four-day party.

The Welsh side – owned by Rob and fellow actor Ryan Reynolds – have been celebrating in the United States after being treated to a luxurious getaway following their historic promotion to League Two.

Players have been pictured in great spirits at the all-expenses paid trip that McElhenney and Kaitlin couldn’t resist getting involved in – but they decided to take a step back and act like responsible parents to ensure the players didn’t get sun burnt as they soaked up the sun.

McElhenney posted a video of Kaitlin applying cream to the back of a Wrexham player as he relaxed in the pool while his team-mates partied next to him with drinks and music.

‘Mom and Dad made sure the boys didn’t burn,’ he wrote in the caption alongside the video on his Instagram story.

Wrexham have been living it up with parties at the iconic MGM Grand – while they’ve also been wined and dined at the luxurious Spago restaurant, where prices can reach up to £79 ($100) per head.

They also partied at Hakkasan nightclub, OMNIA – where they were invited into DJ Steve Aoki’s booth – and Marquee Dayclub.
