From Phillip Schofield coming out as gay to Love Island's Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury coming under fire after losing their Pomeranian puppy, new magazine have looked back at the biggest news stories from 2020 before the New Year.

JANUARY

The year started off with a bang on 8 January when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced on Instagram they were stepping back as senior members of the royal family. A revelation subsequently dubbed ‘Megxit.’

The couple said they’d be splitting their time between the UK and North America and aimed to become financially independent from the royal family in a move that reportedly blindsided the British monarchy.

After a meeting with senior royals, it was announced on 18 January that the pair would no longer be working royals and wouldn’t use their Royal Highness titles. Along with buying a house in California, Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, have given us a taste of their new projects – a charity initiative called Archewell, a TV deal with Net ix and a podcast partnership with Spotify.

FEBRUARY

He’d been married to wife Stephanie Lowe for nearly 27 years, but on 8 February, Phillip Schofield released a statement on Instagram to say that he was gay after going through “inner conflict”. The TV star praised Stephanie, 56, and their daughters, Molly, 27, and Ruby, 24, for their support.

Moments later, Phillip, 58, appeared on This Morning to talk to his co-host Holly Willoughby in an emotional interview.

“All you can be in your life is honest with yourself. I was getting to a stage in my life where I was thinking I don’t really like myself because I’m not being honest,” he said.

We love you, Phil!

MARCH

Disgraced Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after he was found guilty of rape and sexual assault on 12 March. Weinstein was first accused of sexual misconduct in October 2017, sparking a resurgence of the #MeToo movement, which then swept across Hollywood.

Weinstein, 67, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing, arrived at his sentencing in a wheelchair and addressed the court for the first time, saying he felt “deep remorse”.

Just hours later, he was taken to hospital with chest pains and reportedly underwent heart surgery after his conviction.

APRIL

With concerts cancelled across the globe and most of the UK in lockdown due to coronavirus, celebrities banded together on the 18 April to entertain us from their living rooms.

The special concert, in aid of the World Health Organisation, was curated by Lady Gaga and saw the likes of Elton John, Lizzo, Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift perform their biggest hits.

A six-hour long pre-show was broadcast online with presenters including Jameela Jamil and Matthew McConaughey and guest appearances with everyone from Michelle Obama to Chrissy Teigen. And we all bopped away on our sofas.

MAY

After 12 years as a team captain on the chaotic quiz show, Holly Willoughby announced her departure from Celebrity Juice on 4 May.

Holly followed her pal Fearne Cotton, who left the long-running series in 2018. Holly revealed her decision on Instagram, writing, “All good things must come to an end and nothing lasts forever.”

Cheeky host Keith Lemon – who famously dubbed her Holly WiIloughbooby on the show – thanked Holly for her service and said, “Thank you for making me laugh for 12 years.”

However, Holly promised it wasn’t a total goodbye, saying that she’d be back as a guest in the future.

JUNE

Love Island’s Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury came under fire in June, when the Pomeranian puppy Tommy, 21, bought Molly-Mae for her 21st birthday died just a week after they brought it home.

The dog – who they named Mr Chai – had been imported from Russia and died after suffering a seizure. Fans criticised the couple on social media for using a breeder known for importing pets from abroad.

In response, the pair shot a video where they revealed the dog’s autopsy results, which they said proved shipping him to the UK had nothing to do with his death.

JULY

After Kanye West announced he was running to be President of the United States on 4 July, it all seemed to go downhill for him and the rest of the Kardashians.

Kanye, 43, branded mother-in-law Kris Jenner a “white supremacist” and broke down during his first presidential rally. He went on to secure just 60,000 votes out of the 160 million up for grabs in the US election. Oh dear.

And it all turned from bad to worse when the next season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, which was set to air its 19th series, was axed. While Kourtney, Kylie and Kendall had taken a step back from filming, the rapper was blamed for the cancellation of the rest of the show.

It’s tough at the top, guys!

AUGUST

The showbiz world was left stunned when Sarah Harding announced her advanced-stage breast cancer diagnosis via social media on August 26.

The former Girls Aloud star revealed she had learnt the news earlier in the year before the cancer subsequently spread to other parts of her body.

Sarah, 39, has since bravely opened up to fans about the “devastating news” and is “fighting” through the “tough treatment” while documenting the experience in her forthcoming autobiography Hear Me Out.

SEPTEMBER

Breaking hearts across the globe, former One Direction star Zayn Malik and supermodel Gigi Hadid welcomed their first child on 23 September. As they’ve kept their daughter’s name under wraps, fans have dubbed the little one – who arguably has the hottest genes ever – Zigi.

Revealing snippets of information about the baby, the couple said Gigi, 25, had a “smooth” birth and that the tot was an “angel”. Dusk Till Dawn singer Zayn, 27, was reportedly “very emotional” at the birth, promising he would never disappoint his family.

OCTOBER

Our hearts ached for Chrissy Teigen when the model announced that she and singer husband John Legend had lost their baby in October. She was around 20 weeks pregnant.

They had named their son Jack, and he was a baby brother to Luna, four, and two-year-old Miles. The couple shared a tribute to Jack alongside heart-wrenching pictures from Chrissy’s hospital bed.

“Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever,” the post said.

NOVEMBER

It’s safe to say Rita Ora won’t be forgetting her 30th birthday any time soon. Despite the restrictions of a second lockdown, the Hot Right Now singer still went ahead with a swanky bash at west London restaurant Casa Cruz on 28 November.

On being busted, she said the party was a “spur of the moment decision’ and that she was deeply sorry and embarrassed. She also said the do was “a serious and inexcusable error of judgement”.

But the controversy didn’t end there as she was subsequently slammed for failing to self-isolate following a trip to Egypt she took a week before her birthday party. Oh, Rita…

DECEMBER

Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher won the hearts of the nation to be crowned the first ever Queen of the Castle in this year’s I’m A Celeb.

Despite relocating from the Australian jungle to a Welsh castle because of the pandemic, the series was still a hit. It had royal revelations, gross eating challenges – and who could forget “megashag”?

Upon winning the show, Giovanna, 35, who has three sons with McFly hubby Tom Fletcher, said, “Mums can be strong and I feel like I proved that.”

You sure did, Gi!
