Gardeners’ World co-presenter Adam Frost, 52, has told how he nearly missed out on the BBC presenting role at the age of 21, as he was “so arrogant” back in his twenties. The horticulturalist started off presenting the gardening programme alongside Welsh host Geoff Hamilton until his death at 60, and continued after his mentor died.
I was so arrogant that I said, ‘Can I think about it?’

After being moved down to Devon by his family, Adam bagged a job as an apprentice gardener.
But he soon returned to London where he found work as a landscape gardener.
However, when the 1990’s recession hit, Adam soon lost his job and desperately applied to an ad he spotted, working at Geoff’s garden in Rutland.
The gardening enthusiast admitted that he applied for the role despite never having watched an episode of the BBC show.
He told The Telegraph last month: “At 21? I was too busy down the pub with my mates.”
However, upon meeting the horticulturalist, Adam admits that he was “wowed” by his personality.
“I’d never been in the presence of someone charismatic before and I remember thinking ‘wow’,” he said.
“I think it was Geoff’s understated passion for horticulture that got me.”
Nevertheless, the star didn’t get the job due to being under-qualified, which the TV presenter let him know himself.
“Geoff rang me and said, ‘You did well, boy, but the other man is better qualified,'” Adam said.
Disheartened by not making the grade, the gardener decided that gardening wasn’t for him, but soon changed his mind when Geoff backtracked and offered him the role.
After explaining that the initial candidate hadn’t worked out, Geoff asked Adam whether he was still interested in working with him.
But Adam now admits that he nearly missed out on the Gardeners’ World role due to his cocky nature as a young man.
“I was so arrogant that I said, ‘Can I think about it?’” Adam said cheekily.
He went on to add that a girlfriend soon “drummed some sense into him” and he took the job working with Geoff until he died in 1996.
Adam has since remained on the show, stepping in for the likes of Monty Don.
Last month the Gardeners’ World team reacted after one viewer revealed that they held a secret flame for the TV host,.
Following a recent episode of the show, the viewer commented: “I’ve got a secret crush on Adam Frost from #GardenersWorld.”
The BBC show’s team picked up on the comment and cheekily replied: “It’s OK, your secret’s safe with us.”
The viewer’s post prompted many more Adam admirers to comment, with one admitting that they could “listen to him read the phone book”.
