Alastair Campbell, 63, had a successful career in politics as Tony Blair’s spokesman, but it appears his latest role is presenting a particularly tough new challenge, as he became a co-host alongside Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain this week. The former Mind Champion Of The Year shared his struggles in a candid Twitter video, as he opened up on how “sleep deprivation” had affected him following three early starts

In the video, Alastair pottered around his kitchen earlier this morning, as he gave viewers an insight into his new routine.

He showed a kettle on his stove, and explained: “Making my own tea, it’s a rarity I’ve got to be honest.”

The politician then picked up a pair of shoes, which he said were Burnley Football Club branded.

He explained: “People were wondering yesterday if I was serious about having Burnley Football Club shoes.

“Well I am, look, there’s cranberry laces. Crest on the bottom of the shoe.”

Next he unveiled his research for the next edition of Good Morning Britain, which would welcome journalists Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce, plus special guest Vinnie Jones.

“Here’s my research… Kevin and Andrew Pierce.”

Showing his copy of Vinnie’s autobiography, he continued: “Then this guy and I’ve been actually loving this book.“

Alastair explained in the caption of the clip that he had been struggling to get into a routine with his sleep during his stint on GMB.

He wrote: “Three days in the @gmb house and I am beginning to realise why sleep deprivation is a form of torture … a few hints here on what’s coming up.”

In response, his followers shared how he had been a “refreshing” addition to the morning TV show, after his predecessor Piers Morgan resigned from the show.

One said: “You’re doing a great job on GMB. Thank you. You and John Bercow made our day yesterday.  Well done.”

Another replied: “Yeah managing sleep with odd shifts is rough. I was on a day shift Monday and night shift last night. It’s seriously bad for physical and mental health.. There may be a topic for discussion on acceptable work patterns.”

A third commented: “Been enjoying it. A very refreshing change.”

While a fourth stated: “Keep going. At least we have one news outlet which approaches reality.”

It comes as yesterday, Piers took to Twitter to question if celebrities cash in on mental health campaigns before clashing with Alastair over the remarks.

Questioning the validity of some celeb mental health charity endorsements, Piers asked: “I’m curious to know just how much money famous ‘mental health campaigners’ are making from constantly preaching about it & exploiting their myriad ‘problems’ – and what percentage of that money they give to mental health charities.”

He added: “Celebrity victimhood is a lucrative business.”

Alastair tweeted: “If you mean me @piersmorgan – @schooltruth and I have a charity account which takes a share of my earnings, which go to causes we believe in, mainly mental health and education for poorer children.

“I do paid speaking gigs and often ask for fees to be paid to charity.”

But Piers denied Alastair had been the inspiration for his Twitter comment, brutally hitting back: “No, I was talking about celebrities.”
